FOLDING UMBRELLA.

Be it known that I, Pn'rnrrms FELIX MA: GUIRE, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Folding Umbrellas, of which the '3 is a sectional elevation of the upper runner,

a part of the stick, and the fastening-nuts. Fig. 4 is a side elevation, partly in section, of the rib-joint enlarged. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the lower runner fastening nut.

The object of this invention is to provide umbrellas constructed in such a manner that they can be readily foldedinto small space for convenience in transportation.

The nature of this invention consists of a stick or staff having runners, braces, jointed ribs having sleeves and bands, a nut screwed upon said staff or upon asleeve fitted on the latter, a cover adapted to be detachably connected to the ribs, and a cap-nut fitting upon the umbrella and the aforesaid nut.

It consists, further, in certain details of the construction and arrangement of the aforesaid elements, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth.

A represents the stick, which is made in two or more parts or sections connected together by screw-tenons and sockets or other suitable means.

Upon the stick A, near its upper end, or upon a sleeve secured to the said stick, is screwed the stationary runner B, which is secured in place by a nut, C, also screwed upon the said stick or sleeve. The upper parts, D, of the ribs are secured to the upper or stationary runner, B, in the ordinary manner. The lowerend's of the upper parts, D, of the ribs are forked to receive the upper ends of the lower parts, E, of the said ribs. r

F are the braces, the outer ends of which are forked to receive theadjacent ends of the parts D E of the ribs, and thethree ends are hinged together by a rivet. The inner ends of the braces F are hinged to the lower or movable runner, G, in the ordinary manner. The runner G slides upon the stick A, and is held in each position by an ordinary spring-catch, H. Upon the lower end of the upper part, D, of the ribs is placed a sleeve, I, which is made with a projecting arm, J, upon the outer side of its lower end, to overlap the joint of the two parts D E of the ribs and hold the said joints rigid. Thejoint of the ribs and braces is further stifi'ened'and strengthened by a ring or band, K, which is notched to passtwo pins, L, attached to the braces F directly beneath the'sections D E of the ribs, and by which the said ring'is held in place adjustably.

M is the cover, which has a hole in its center for the passage of the upper end of the stick A, and has holes formed in it around the edge of its center hole to receive hooksN orother fastenings attached to or formed upon the nut O. The center of the cover M is secured in place and clamped against the out 0 by a nut, O, screwed upon the stick A or upon a sleeve secured to the said stick. The cover M is provided with strings P, to be tied around the ribs D E, and which are prevented from slipping by notches formed in or projections formed upon the said ribs D E. In the outer end of each rib is formed ahole in the ordinary manner, into which the outer pair of strings is tied.

With this construction the coverM can be readily put on and taken 0d, and can thus be easily changed for a cover of another color or material, as may be desired. With this construction the umbrella can be readily taken apart and the frame folded into a compact form, so that the umbrella can be carried ina valise or traveling-bag.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. Ina folding umbrella, the combination, with the braces F and the jointed ribsD E, of

the rings K,substantially as herein shown and described, whereby the connection between the said braces and jointed ribs is strengthened, as set forth.

2. In a folding umbrella, the combination of the stick or staff A, the runners B G, the braces ing means for detachably connecting it to the ribs D E, and the cap-nut O, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

3. In a folding umbrella, the combination, with the stufi' or stick A, having the runnerB and the ribs D F, of the nut (J, having hooks N at its upper edge, and the cover M, provided around its central opening with a series of additional openings, which receive the hooks N, said cover being detachably connected to the IO said ribs, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
