Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANCESCO PAOLO ANnLLo, a subject of the King of Italy, residing in the city of Newark, Essex county, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Umbrellas and Parasols, of which the following is a specification.

My improvements relate to umbrellas, parasols, &c., having extensible frames and flexible coverings, such as ordinarily known and used; and the object is to afford simple but practical and effective means whereby the covering may be quickly and conveniently detached or replaced, or another cover substituted by the owner or possessor, thereby avoiding the trouble, expense and delay involved theretofore in having the frame recovered by a maker or repairer of such articles.

In the accompanying drawings, Flgure 1, represents a sectional elevation of a portion of an umbrella made in accordance with my invention, the scale being necessarily relatively small; Fig. 2, is a full size side elevation of the clamping sleeve by which the central portion of the flexible canopy or cover is secured in position on the rod and frame; Fig. 3, is a View of the under side thereof; Fig. 4, is a longitudinal section of Fig. 2; Fig. 5, is a sectional elevation illustrating the method of clamping the central portion of the cover in place; Fig. 6, is a view showing the outer end or tip of one of the ribs of the frame, and one of my tip socket caps in alinement therewith; Fig. 7, is an elevation of a rib tip and a section of a tip socket cap applied thereto; Fig. 8, is a view illustrating the method of utilizing the tip socket caps in securin the outer edges of the cover to the tips of t e ribs of the frame.

In the drawings, A, represents an ordinary central stick or rod such as used in the manufacture of umbrellas, parasols, &c., to which is rigidly secured the annular flanged hub a, to which the inner ends of the frame ribs 6, Z), are pivotally connected in the usual or any other suitable way.

As is well known the flexible cover a, usually consists of seven, or eight, (more or less, corresponding and according to the number of ribs in the Irame) segmental gores of silk or other suitable material, the longitudinal edges of each isosceles being united to those of adjoining gores, and a central circular opening being formed in the cover thus constituted to admit of the insertion of the upper end a, of the stick or rod A. The edge of this central annular openlng in the cover, when the upper end a, of the rod is thus inserted therein, is made to rest upon the annular flange of the hub piece a,

before referred to, and is secured thereto by means of the clamping device D, fitting over the end a, of the stick or rod A, and coupled thereto by any suitable mechanical expedient. Thus I herein show the clamping sleeve D, as consisting of a tubular sleeve proper (Z, fitting snugly over the cy lindrical surface of the upper end a, of the stick or rod A, said internal sleeve (Z, carrying an external shell (1, the edges d, of which bear against the cover 0, beyond and surrounding the edge of the central hole therein referred to, and the central tubular sleeve cl, being also formed with a bayonet slot (Z for engagement with a stud a", protruding from one side of the upper portion a, of the stick or rod A. The external thimble or shell (l', of the clamping device D, affords room for the outer end of the stud (4 as well as a bearing on the cover of greater diameter than the central opening therein. It will thus be seen that a partial turn of the clamping device D, will secure it to or release it from rigid engagement with the stick or red A, so that in so far as the central portion of the cover is ,concerned it is quickly and conveniently attachable to or detachable from the frame work of the umbrella or parasol.

Heretoforc the outer or tip ends of the ribs of the frame have been formed with eyes or perforations for the reception of the threads by which the edges of the cover at the lines of seam between the segmental gores, were secured directly and permanently (to all intents and purposes) to said ribs. The extreme outer tips of the ribs have also been made of globular form to afford a finished appearance and render them blunt and less dangerous.

A feature of construction consists in providing the outer edges of the cover, preferably as heretofore at the lines of juncture between the segmental gores as when permanently sewing the cover to the ribs, with tip socket caps s, of special form, adapted to fit over the outer ends 6', b, of ribs 6, b, said rib ends Z), being preferably reduced in diameter and made cylindrical in cross section, so that tip socket caps s, of small Patented Mar. 26, 1912.

diameter may be used. These tip socket caps s, are closed at their outer ends, which may be made globular to resemble the end tips of the ribs as heretofore; and each tipv .with, the tips I), of the ribs Z), while the elasticity and resilience of the latter admits of the tips 6, being sprung into said socket pieces 8, when the frame is closed, with the cover secured centrally in position as here inbefore described. Hence, if it is desired to remove, replace or renew a cover for any reason, it is only necessary to close the umbrella in the usual way, spring back the ribs Z2 successively to release their tips I), and then, after a partial turn of the clamping device D, to withdraw the latter and the cover 0. The replacement or renewal of the cover may be effected with equal facility.

By my invention a single umbrella frame may be made to answer for a series of covers of different shades of color or pat tern,a number of covers being sold with each frame,-or the covers may become a stock article of purchase so that the possessor of the frame can personally replace a cover when worn or damaged.

For parasols, the covers of which are by preference of style presumed to harmonize with the costume of the user, my invention is especially adaptable,the necessary manipulation of the parts in effecting a change of cover being so simple and easy that even a child would find no difiiculty in the operation.

It is to be understood that by the use of the term umbrella herein I include and designate parasols and similar structures and devices.

Vhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,

In an umbrella of the character desig hated, the combination with the frame work of the stick A, formed with the stud a and with the annular flanged hub piece a, the removable cover 0, formed with the central opening for the insertion of the stick, the clamping device D, consisting of the tubular sleeve cl, formed with the bayonet slot (1 adapted to engage the stud a on the stick, and the external bearing shell d, rigidly attached to said sleeve d, and inclosing it and the stud a as and for the purpose set forth.
