ANTOINE AIME EEVEL, OF LYON, FRANCE.
MEANS FOR RETAINING THE ENDS OF THE RIBS 9F UMBBELLAS AND THE LIKE Ihl' CLOSED FOSITION.
Application filed November 11, 1912.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that T, ANTOINE AIME R-nvnn, a citizen of the French Republic, residing at 5 Rue Pizay, Lyon, France, manufacturer, have invented certain new and useful Tmprovements in Means for Retaining the Ends of the Ribs of Umbrellas and the like in Closed Position, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improved means for retaining the ends of the ribs of umbrellas, sunshades and the like when they are closed.
The improved means comprise the combination of a movable non-elastic ring capable of engaging over the ends of the ribs when the umbrella is closed and of sliding along the stick, with an elastic member analogous to those used in pressure buttons, said member fixed to and surrounding the stick and seated against the handle of the umbrella. The elastic member holds the non-elastic ring by sprin pressure when it is applied on it.
The annexed vention.
Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of part of an umbrella provided with the device, which is shown in the position which it occupies when the umbrella is to be opened. Fig. 2 is a similar view, the umbrella being closed and the extremities of the ribs united by t e movable ring which constitutes one of the elements of the device. Figs. 3, 4t and 5 are respectively an elevation, a plan, and a section on line 55 on a larger scale of the fixed member operating to fix the ring again and the handle of the umbrella when it is open. Fig. 6 is a section on an enlarged scale of the movable ring. Fig. 7 is a section of a variation of construction of the ring.
The handle A of the umbrella is mounted in the usual manner on the end of the stick B of smaller diameter. The elastic member is preferably provided with a sleeve C, by means of which it is fixed by a pin or the like to the stick. D is the ring.

Serial No. 230,584.
The member is provided at one end with outwardly turned over ecges forming a kind of mushroom head 0 which is divided into several parts by slits C so as to operate as an ordinary pressure button so that it can hold the ring D on its periphery. In this position the ads of the ribs not being retained, the umbrella can be opened or turned upside down without the ring sliding along the stick.
When the umbrella is closed it is sui'iicient in order to retain the ends of the ribs to assemble them and then exercise a light pressure on the ring D in order to disengage it from the elastic member so that it slides over the ends of the ribs where it re mains, being held by the lateral pressure exercised by the ends of the ribs against it. The ring can be a simple ring or provided with a cup like border or extension to en e over the ends of the ribs as shown in W hat T claim as my invention and de sire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is ll ieans for retaining the ends of ribs of umbrellas and the like in closed position, comprising a member affixed to the umbrella stick and having overturned outwardly extended portions separated by slits to provide a resilient head, and a movable ring arranged on the stick and adapted to be held against the handle when the umbrella is open by engaging said resilient head, and to be removed from engagement with said head and to be placed over the ends of the ribs of the frame when the umbrella is closed to retain said ribs in the closed position, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two witnesses.
