Description
A. DITTRIOH. Umbrella Tip-Cup.
No. 202,710. Patented April 23, 1878.
. iii-est UNITED STATEs PATENT OEEIcE.
ADOLPH DITTRIOH, OF ST. LUKES, ENGLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN UMBRELLA TIP-CUPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 202,710, dated April 23, 1878; application filed February 12, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADOLPH DITTRICH, of St. Lukes, in the county of Middlesex, England, have invented anew and Improved Umbrella Tip-Cup; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
As umbrellas and parasols are usually con structed, the tip-cup and its spring require to be slid along the stick to their place on the handle, which involves the dismounting of the whole frame, if the tip-cup be applied after the umbrella or parasol has been fitted up.
My invention relates to the construction and arrangement of parts whereby the tip-cup may be readily applied without difficulty or delay, and without requiring detachment of any portion of the frame of the umbrella or parasol.
In the annexed drawing, Figure 1 represents an external view of aspring tip-cup applied to an umbrella-stick according to my invention. Fig. 2 represents a central longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 represents a similar section, the tip-cup being shown drawn back, as for releasing the tips of the umbrella-ribs.
The tip-cup A is fitted to slide directly on the reduced portion 01 of the umbrella-stick, between two shoulders, b 0, formed, respectively, on the stick B and handle 0. In order to mount the improved tip-cup in its place without sliding it along from the point or small end of the stick, the handle 0 is made separate from the stick B, (technically known as the fit-up,) and united thereto by a screwjoint, 0. The tip-cup is provided with a tubular extension, a, longer than the neck or reduced portion 01, so as to cover the upper shoulder a, and of a diameter to fit closely and slide upon the handle G, asshown. In
the annular space between this tubular extension a and the neck (1, which it incloses, a spiral spring, is located, which encircles the neck d, and abuts at one end against the shoulder a, and at the other end against a collar or neck, f, formed on the tubular extension at, between it and the cup A, and fitting on the neck 61 of the stick, so as to strengthen the neck, and guide the cup in its sliding movement. By locating the spring g upon a neck smaller than the handle 0, the diameter of the tube a need not be larger than necessary for it to slide on the handle 0, and the spring tip-cup is thus made as neat in appearance as a tip-cup without a spring. The cup abuts against the shoulder b, and the whole cup is thus confined and works between the two shoulders. The outer end of the tubular extension at is engraved or otherwise ornamented at i with a perforated or other design, and left bright to imitate the ordinary band with which the handle is usually ornamented, the rest of the tube a between this portion '5 and the cup proper being colored or painted to match the handle, so that at a cursory glance the imitation band will appear to be altogether separated from the cup-extension 00.
I am aware umbrella-sticks have been reduced in thickness at the lower end to receive the springs of tip-cups, and I do not therefore claim such construction or combination.
What I claim is In combination with the stick B, part 01, screw 6, and the detachable handle 0, the tipcup A, having the reduced portion f and extension a, the spiral spring g, acting against the shoulder c, and the neck d, which latter also abuts the shoulder 11 of the stick, as shown and described, for the purpose specified.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this 17th day of January, 1878.
ADOLPH DITTRIGH.
Witnesses WM. CLARK, T. W. KENNARD.
