IMPROVEMENT IN GANE AND UMBRELLA COMBINED.

TO ALL WHOM I'I MAY CONCERN:

Be it known that I, GEORG BOCKSTALLR, of Np. 251 Eleventh street, in the city, county,;and State ot' New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Combined Gane and Umbrella; Aand Ido hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact Adescription thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 represents a longitudinal central section of ny invention, when folded.

This invention relates to a combined cane and umbrella, so arranged that the umbrella-cover can be detached and put on at discretion', and when detached, the frame can be folded up ina very small compass, and inserted in a suitable case or sheath, of no more thickness than that of an ordinary walking-cane.

The invention consists in providing the cover with eyes or loops at each corner, which eyes, when made to catch over the ends of t@ retain the cover rmly on the lframe; further; in making the stick of the umbrellaof a solid sprinamteinpered cast-steelfrod, as thin as safety allows, and provided with little keys, which catch in cavities in the fastener, and lock" the umbrella when closed or opened; the whole to be enclosed inl a.

On the handle A, made of any suitable shape and material, is secured a solid cast-steel rod, B, as thin 'as safety allows, and to which arc secured the ribs C and braces D, in the manner common with ordinary umbrellas. In order to close or open the umbrella, the fastener is movedin such position that thekey e passes through the slot c, and by a twisting motion ofthe hand, is brought through thevcircular slot d, and retains the umbrella in position. Thu-s is obtained a fastening-for umbrellas which is easily operated, and not weakening to the stick.

The cover is provided with a central plate, g, having a hole'that fits over the end oi' the stick B, and eyes f, that'lit over the ends ofthe ribs C, where they are kept imposition by thelittle projections h. When detached,

When my invention is used as an umbrella, the sheath F, being'made of suitable material, eanbe folded.'A up and carried in the pocket. Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, anddesire to secureby Letters Patent- The combination of the cover, detachable from the stretehers, and from the stick and the sheath F, arranged to'take the place of the cover, and to give to the umbrella the appearance of' a walking-stick, all as set `forth.
