Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE..
GEORGE STYLES, OF NEW YORK,` N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN UIVIBRELLAS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 53,702, dated April 3, 1866.
To all lwhom 'it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE STYLES, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Parasols, 85e.; and I do hereby declare that theiol lowing is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specicaion, in which- Figure l represents a longitudinal central section of this invention when the sameis open and ready for use. Fig. 2 is a detached sectional view of a portion ofthe staff. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the same, taken in the plane indicated by the line x a', Fig. l.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
This invention relates to a parasol the staff of which is constructed on the telescope principie, so that the same can be len gthened when the parasol is to be used and shortened when theparasol is not used. Theinner or extension tube is slotted throughout a large portion of its length, and a pin passing transversely through it, and secured iii the outer or main tube, prevents the same from turning round,
and a suitable spring-catch attached to the runner drops into holes in the outer and inner tubes and locks the parasol both when the' same is open and when it is closed.
A represents the staff of my parasol, which is constructed of an outer tube, a., and an inner tube, b. To the top end of the outer tube a ring, c, is firmly secured, which sustains the wire that forms the bearings for the ends oi" the ribs d in the ordinary manner, and a runner, e, slides up and down on said outer tube, which sustains a wire, j', that forms the bearings for the braces g.
The tube b is fitted in the tube a., and it is provided with a slot, h, through which a pin, fi, passes, that is secured in the outer tube, a, so that said inner tube can be drawn in or out to the extent of the slot; butit is not allowed to turn in the main tube. A handle, B, secured to the inner tube, b, serves to operate the same and to hold the parasol when the same is to be used. This handle is provided with an annular socket to admit the lower end of the main tube a, so that the length of the statt' can be reduced as much as possible when the parasol is not used.
The ruimer e is provided with a springcatch, j, which diops into a liole,7c, in the outer tube and over the end of the inner tube when the parasol is open, and into holes lm in the outer and inner tubes when the parasol is closed, and by these means said parasol is locked when it is open as well as when it is closed. p
The spring-catch j consists of a pin which is supported by a trigger-spring, n, and guided in the runner. By pressing against the curved part of the trigger-spring the pin is released from the socket in the ruimer and from the holes in the tubes, and the para-sol can be opened or closed, as the case may be.
By this arrangement a simple and durable parasol is obtained, the statt' of which can be readily lengthened or shortened, and which when shortened is convenient to carry in a hatbox or other small receptacle.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The telescope-tubes a b, with holes k Z m, in combination with the spring-catchy' and runner e of a parasol, constructed and operating substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The trigger-springn, in combination with the catch j, ruimer c, and tubes a b, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this 14th dayot September, 1865.
GEORGE STYLES.
