TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, OLE K. BERNBAUM, of Brooklyn, Kings county, New York, have invented, made, and applied to use a new and useful Folding Trunk; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and correct description of my said invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon', in which Figure `1 is a transverse sectional view of my improved trunk. when in use.
Figure 2, a longitudinal sectional view of my improved trunkwhenfin use.'
Figure 3, a transverse sectional view of my improved trunk, showing the same when being folded.
In the drawings, like parts of the invention are pointed out by the same letters of reference.
The nature ofmy invention consists in the construction and operation of a. folding trunk, as more fully The object of the present invention is to so construct a trunk that, when not in use, it may be folded up, and thus be made to occupy less room than if made in the ordinary way. To sailors, travellers, and others, my invention will be found particularly valuable.l l i To enable those skilled in the arts to make, and use my invention, I will proceedto describe thcsame.
The frame of my trunk may be made of woodm'etal, orv any suitable substance, -theffront portion of the same consisting of two parts or pieces, arhinged together about midway the height of thetrunli when ready to be packed. The back portion of the same is also mad'e of two parts or pieces, I1, hinged together in the same manner. The ends of the trunk, shown as Band (luponv the drawings, are hinged at the bottom of the trunk, and made so as to fold inward, as shown in iig` 2when it is desired to fold `the trunl up, and 'outward and beneath the top of the frame when it is desired `to use the trunk. The framework being thusmade may be covered externally' and internally, as desired, oras may be deemed necessary. I Y
Such being the constructio'mthe opertion is as follows: When in use, the trunk presents the appearance shown in fig. l of the drawings, the ends of theA trunk being thrown outward and beneath the top of the frame, and thus keeping the front and baci: portions of thc same in an upright position. When not in use, thetrurnk may be folded or closed, by folding inward the ends B and C, which no longer supporting the hinged back and front, the same gradually fold or fall downward and inward, as is clearly shown in iig. 3, greatly'reducing the size ofv the trunk, and rendering it capable of being stowed away within a comparatively small compass;
As before stated, for sailors, travellers, and all using trunks, and desirous that the 'sume should occupy much less room than trunks usually do, my invention will be found particularly valuable. p l
'Having thus described my invention,`what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- The folding ends, in combination with the hinged sectional back front, for the purposcsherein fully described.
OLE K. BERNBAUM.
