IMPROVED TRUNK.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN 1 Be it known that I, COLUMBUS A. ROSE, of Columbus, in the county of Muscogee, and State of Georgia, have invented a new and useful improvement in Trunks and Valises; and do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being-had to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part of this specification, and in which- 7 Figure 1 is a perspective view of a trunk embodying my invention, the same being shown in its open condition.

Figure 2 is a vertical transverse section of the same as it appears when closed.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.

The object of this invention is to obtain a trunk or valise which shall afford the facilities of a toilet or dressing-table, and which, when opened, shall expose the contents in such a manner that the desired articles can beremoved without disturbing or unpackingthe remainder. To attain this-object I construct the trunk or valise with a series of compartments, each closed by a hinged door, which, when the trunk is opened, can be used as a shelf for convenience in dressing, writing, or otherwise, the lid being so formed as that when opened it shall expose the whole tier of compartments in a consecutive vertical series.

In order that others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains may be enabled to fully understand and use the same, I will proceed. to describe in detail.

'The trunk when opened presents the appearance shown in fig. 1, and, so far as material, shape, and style of finish are concerned, it need not differ from trunks and valises in ordinary use. A is the bodyof' the trunk, and B the lid; the latter comprising a portion of the front and top instead of the top only, as is the case under the ordinary construction. The point of juncturebetween the trunk and its lid when closed is represented by the oblique lines at c. In its transverse section thelid B is triangular, and when the lid is thrown back (it being hinged at D) to open the trunk, the part b rests upon the top a of the trunk, as represented in fig. 1. By means of the horizontal partition D the interior of the trunk, as well as the interior of the lid B, is divided into a plurality of compartments, which are closed by the hinged doors E, and which are all accessible when the trunk is open. These compartments may be subdivided to any desired extent. The straps e sustain the hinged doors E in a horizontal position, so that when opened they constitute shelves, upon which the articles may be conveniently disposed as they are unpacked from the trunk; but it will be seen that these shelves may be used in other ways, as, for instance, in supporting writing materials or toilet articles. I am aware that it is not new to construct a trunk so as to make its lid comprise a portion of both the front and top, and thus expose the internal packing area when opened, but the trunks embodying this feature as heretofore made are furnished with drawers, which materially add to the weight and cost of the article.

' Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new herein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- A trunk provided with a triangplar hinged portion B, andinternal doors or lids E capable of being employed as shelves, substantially as described.
