(No ModeL) W GABLE UMBRELLA OR CANE RAGK'.
".N 402,013. Patented Apr. 23, 1889.
N. PETERS, Pholo-likhvgrapher, Washinglon. ILC.
U ITE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM GABLE, OF SHAMOKIN, PENNSYLVANIA.
UMBRELLA OR CANE RACK SPECIFICATICN forming part of Letters Patent No. 402,013, dated April 23, 1889. Application filed August 15, 1888. Serial No. 282,777. (No model.)
Tb, all ivhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM GABLE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Sha1nokin, in the county of Northumberland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Umbrella or Cane Racks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has relation to umbrella or cane racks of that class in which the rack or stand contains a number of compartments, each of which is adapted to receive an umbrella or cane; and it consists in the detailed construction and combination of parts of a rack or stand of that class, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, and in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts, I have illustrated one form of rack embodying the essential features of my invention, although the same may be carried into effect in other ways without in the least departing from the spirit thereof, and in this drawing the figure is a perspective view of my improved rack, showing a number of umbrellas and canes in place therein.
Referring to the drawing, A designates the frame of the device, consisting in this instance of two end pieces, a, and a number of aperture'd cross-pieces, a, connecting the two ends. These ends and cross-pieces may be made of Wood or other suitable material, and ornamented in any way that may be desired to give the device a neat and finished appearance. To the upper portion of the ends, and
on each side, is secured a cross-piece, the rear one, a having the lid B hinged to it, and the front one, a having a number of figures or other appropriate characters thereon corresponding to a number of checks hung directly beneath and in line with the characters, thesaid checks being detachable from the hooks a on which they hang. These checks are to be given to a person upon depositing either an umbrella or cane.
The cross-pieces a, as before stated, are provided with a number of apertures, a in which the umbrellas or canes are placed, the lower ends of which rest in a drip-pan, C, placed in the bottom of the frame. It will be observed that the handles of the above-named articles are below the lid, so that a person will be enabled to recognize his property at a glance, but will be prevented removing the same, for the reason that the lid is securely fastened by a look, a", the key to which is intended to be carried by the clerk or person in charge of the rack.
It will be seen that the several apertures or openings in the rack or stand are closed by means of a single cover and a single lock and key, so that any one of the contents of the rack or stand may be removed on presenta tion of the proper check by unlocking and opening this cover, which is of a length and width corresponding to the length, and width of the stand.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States The combination, in an umbrella or cane rack, of the vertical side pieces, the horizon tal cross-pieces connecting the vertical sides and provided with a series of apertures adapted to receive and hold the canes or umbrellas deposited in the rack, a drip-pan located in the bottom of the rack, and a single cover hinged upon one side of the rack at its top part and adapted to overlap and cover the entire series of apertures or receptacles and the articles placed therein, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my-signature in presence of two witnesses. V WILLIAM GABLE.
Witnesses:
W. H. UNGER, NORMAN W. H. SCHAFER.
