UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ETTA'MAY THOMAS, OF ADAIR, ILLINOIS.
WARDROBE-TRUNK,
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 588,721, dated August 24, 1897.
Application filed September 2,1896. Serial No. 604,663. (No model-l To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ETTA MAY THOMAS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Adair,
' in the county of McDonough and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wardrobe-Trunks and I do declare the following to beat full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has relation toimprovements in wardrobe-trunks and the object is to provide a trunk of this class for the use of theatrical people, commercial men, and others use; and Fig. 4 is a detail section of one of the corners of the trunk, showing the adjustable roller. v
1 and 2 represent the two compartments of the trunk, hinged together at 3 3 and when closed secured and locked by the hasp and lock 4. I
5 5 are a series of ball-casters upon which the trunk rests when in use and which allows the compartments 1 and 2 to be swung around for convenient access to the interior thereof.
6 6 are the lever-handles, pivoted on studbolts, and when opened out for use a recess 7 in their inner upper ends engages a bolt 8 to take up the strain and support them in a horizontal position, and when not in use, or when the trunk is being transported, the handles fold down and their outer ends engagethe' spring-clamps 9, which retain them in place, when they serve as battens or braces to assist in preserving the alinement of the compartments.
1O 10 are recesses in the corners of the trunk, in which is located a guide-bracket 12, its shank 13 sliding in a recess 14 in the frame 15. The lower end of this bracket is bifurcated to receive a roller 16, and when in use the inclined slot 17 in the bracket rests upon a cross-rod 18, which supports it with the periphery of the roller 16 projecting beyond the bottom of the'trunk, and when not in use.
'trunk is intended.
One of the spaces for instance, 20is pro-' vided with a hinged cover or door 21, the innerface of which is formed with a mirror 22, provided with a hinged support 23, which when opened, as shown, rests upon the top of the trunk and forms a convenient glass for the toilet.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, 1s
1. As a new article of manufacture, a wardrobe trunk comprising two compartments, provided with the hinged handles, by which the trunk may be carried and adapted to form battens or braces, when not in use, substantially as shown and described.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a wardrobe-trunk comprising two hinged compartments 1 and 2, the bottom corners of each of which are formed with vertical recesses 10 provided with a smaller alined recess 14, a spring 19, and cross-rod 18, in combination with the bifurcated bracket 12 carrying the rollerf16 and formed with the retaining-slot 17 and; guide-shank 13, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ETTA MAY THOMAS.
