COMBINED TRUNK AND WARDROBE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 282,865, dated August 7, 1883.

Application filed April 21, 1883. (N0 modelJ To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALPHONS DRYFOOS, of

the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Combined Trunk and Wardrobe, of whichthe following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved trunk, the cover of which can be converted into a wardrobe.

The invention consists in a trunk in the cover of which a folding wardrobe is formed, which can be erected by raising the cover, the doors of which wardrobe, when not use, form partitions within the trunk-body.

The invention also consists in various parts and details and combinations 'of the same, as will be fully described and claimed hereinaf- Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a cross-sectional elevation of my improved combinedtrunk and wardrobe, showing the wardrobe erected. Fig. 2 is a cross sectional elevation of the same, showing the wardrobe folded within the cover of the trunk. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal elevation of the hinge of the back of the wardrobe. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of my improved combined trunk and wardrobe on the line 00 m, Fig. 2, showing the wardrobe folded. Fig. 5 is alongitudinal view of the inside of the trunkcover, showing the same raised.

To the upper edge of the rearside of atrunk or chest, A, a U-shaped frame, B, is hinged, the shanks of which are parallel with the ends of the trunk, but do not extend the entire distance from the rear toward the front side of the trunk.

To the upper edge of the front side of the trunk a plate, 0, is hinged, which canbe folded down to rest on the upper edges of the front of the trunk, the longitudinal upper edge of the plate 0 then being adjoining to the ends of the Y shanks of the U-shapedframe B, as shown in the rear piece of the frame, or can be swung down to rest fiat across the top of the trunk. To the free longitudinal edge of the said board D a like board, D, is-hingedby means of a hinge, d, which is provided with a lockingspring, (1, attached to one hinge-section, and provided at its free end with a head adapted to pass into a notch in the other hinge-section.

This hinge is so arranged that when the boards D D are swung upward, so that the board D rests on the board D, as shown in Fig. l, the spring d snaps into the notch in the other hinge-section, and thus locks the boards D D in thevertical position. D are folded, the ends of the boardD rest upon the side pieces or shanks of the U-shaped frame B, and the board D rests upon the board D. The side pieces or shanks of the frame B are provided at their outer edges with .70 upwardlyprojecting flanges B, the height of which is equal to the combined thickness of the boards D D, to the upper edges of which flanges boards E are hinged in such a manner that they can be folded down inward on the boards D D. I To the upper or free ends ofthe boards E boards E are hinged, and the upper ends of the boards E are hinged to the bottom surface of the top board of the trunk-cover F,

which fits closely on the trunk. The boards E are provided in their inner surfaces with short grooves e, projecting inward from the outer edge, which grooves are so located that their top edges are flush with the bottom edge the front of the wardrobe is provided at its 5 lower ends with dowel-pins h,- which pass into recesses in the outer or upper surface of the board 0, near its upper orfree edge, and at its upper end the board H is provided with a spring-bolt, h, which snaps into .a recess in the under surface of the board G. Mortises or recesses for receiving the bolts of the locks H are formed in the inner sides of the boards E.

The shanks or side pieces of the frame B are provided at the bottom with eyes or staples K, into which hooks L can be passed, which are pivoted to the inner sides of the ends of the trunk, which-hooks and eyes hold the frame B down 011 the trunk or chest when desired.

To the under side of one shank of the sid piece of the frame B a hinged folding-brace, M, is hinged, which is also hinged to the inner surface of one of the ends of the trunk. A look, N, with a sliding bolt, is held in the upper part of the board D in such a manner that its bolt can be passed into a mortise in the bottom edge of the board D, or into a morverse partition,.O, must be provided, between which and the end of the trunk the folded doorsJ and center board, H, are placed. The

board G is generally placed on the bottom of the compartment next to the compartment formed of the folded doors J and the center board, H.

During the transportation of the trunk the board D is folded down to rest on the ends or shanks of the frame B, and the board D is folded down on the board D, so that the upper surface of the board D will be about flush with the upper edges of the flanges B. On the ends of the side pieces of the frame B the boards E are folded down over the board D, and the boards E are folded down over the boards E, and they all will be contained within the cover F. The bolt of the lock N is pushed outward, so as to pass into the slot or mortise m in the rear surface of the front of the cover F, thereby holding the folded boards within the cover, which can be opened at pleasure.

If the wardrobe is to be erected, the bolt of the lock N is withdrawn, and the cover F is raised, whereby the boards E E will be raised until the edges of the boards E rest on the boards E. Then the back boards, D D, are swung upward, and are locked in position automatically by means of the spring d of the hinge d. Preferably a screw is passed through the board E, near the rear edge of the same, into the edges of the board D, for the purpose of holding the parts more firmly together. Then the board G is passed into the grooves e in the boards E until the flange 'G rests against the front of .the cover. In order to prevent the raised structure from toppling over, the hooks L are passed through the eyes or staples K. The board 0 is then swung'down, the lower end of the board H is placed on the board h then snaps into the recess of the board G,-

whereby the board H will be held in place, and the doors J, hinged to the board H, serve as the doors of the wardrobe. The front of the cover F is provided in its bottom edge with a recess for receiving the bolt of the trunk-lock, which is held in the front of the trunk in the usual manner.

The size of the wardrobe naturally depends on the sizeof the trunk, for the larger the trunk is the larger will be the wardrobe which can be formed out of its cover. Folding hooks R are hinged to the back board D, which is provided with suitable recesses into which the hooks R are hinged to the back board D, which is provided with suitable recesses into which the hooks R can be folded, so that they will not project beyond the surface of the board D. The wardrobe does not occupy any space in the trunk, but only uses the space in the cover. It can be attached to any trunk or box, and it is especially adapted for trunks used when traveling in the country in summer, as most of the country hotels and boarding-houses are not provided with wardrobes, and it is not convenient to have the clothes packed in a trunk for any length of time, andthe clothes are injured thereby. v e

My improved trunk will be found especially convenient for ladies, as they can erect the wardrobe in a short time, can lock the same, and they can hang dresses, &c. in such a manner that they will not be injured, as they are when kept folded.

If desired, the doors J and the boa-rd H can be placed in the cover.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The combination, with a trunk and its cover, of a frame hinged to the top of the back of the trunk, which frame fits within the upper part of the trunk, and boards hingedto the said frame and to the cover, substantially as herein shown and described, 'and for the purpose set forth.
