SPECIFICATION forming' part of Letters Patent No. 269,861, dated January 2, 1883.

To all witam it may concrn Be it known that I, WILLIAM D. IsAAcs, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvemcnt in Umbrellas and Parasols, of which the following is a specifioation.
My invention relates to the caps used to cover the tips of umbrella and parasol ribs, Wherein I providea spring' to press up the said caps and prevent their working down, so as to eease to hold the tips; and it consists in the devices substantially as hereinafter set forth.

In my construction I connect directly with the cap A a.spiral spring, B, having one end resting against a shoulder, (J, of said Cap, and the other against the end of the handle S. The cap moves freely on the sleeve D on the stick E, and has a flange end, F, made to enter the spring. the coil having an end Wound up over this flange end. On the sleeve is a oircular rib or bead, G, to prevent the cap from being pressed up to far. When thecap has been pressed down off from the tips L the spring will react it; and when once the tips are inserted in the cap the spring Will hold the cap in position, so that they Will not be disengaged.
In the form I have described, and shown in Fig. 2, the spring lies out in Sight; but it may bedesirable to have the spring concealed, and
to provide for that I put over the spring a case, H, having .one end fiang'ed and resting' against a bead, O, on the sleeve, with the spring' inside of the iiange, and having the other end made to cover the flange K on the cap, as seen in Fig'. 1. In this l'orm, when the cap is pressed down to release the tips the fiang'e K moves inside of the case, this flange supporting the end ot' the case; 'but this flange is not required when the spring' is uucovered.
1. The combination of the sleeve D, having' the rib or bead G, the cap A, provided with the tiang'e end, F, entering the spring, and the spring' B and handle S, substantially as and for the purpose spectied.
2. The combination'of the sleeve D, having the beads G and O, the cap provided with the flang'es F and K, the spring B, and case H, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
