F. S.'BROWN.
Umbrella Tip-Cup.
Patented Sept. 7,1875.
PLFETERS. PHDTO-LITHOGRAPHER WASHINGTON D c NITED STATES FELIX S. BROWN, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN UMBRELLA-TIP CUPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 167,429, dated September 7, 1875 application filed Jnne14, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FELIX S. BROWN, of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented an Improvement in Tip-Cups for Umbrellas, 8250., of which the following is a specification:
Tip-cups have been made toslide upon the handles of umbrellas and parasols to confine the ends or tips of the ribs; and in some instances springs have been employed to move these cups toward the tips, but such springs have been placed between a metal cylinder around the handle and the cup, and the spring did not perform the duty of attaching the cup to the handle. Besides this there is great difficulty in fitting the cylinder to the stick, because the sticks vary in size and shrink after they are turned up.
My invention consists in a spring attached permanently at one end to the tip-cup,and at the other end to the handle, whereby said spring performs two duties: first, that of a connection between the tip-cup and handle for holding the cup in place, and, second, that of a spring to press the cup toward the tips after it has been withdrawn by hand. This cup and spring are highly ornamental as well as durable and reliable, and the spring and cup are adapted to the varying sizes of sticks, as the spring and cup are large enough to move freely on the handle.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is an elevation of the tip-cup and a portion of the handle and ribs; and Fig. 2 is a view of the spring detached from the handle with the tip-cup in section.
parasol are of any ordinary character, and the tip-cup c is of asize and shape adapted to the tips. The helical spring 61 is of a size to slide freely over the handle a, and at one end it is permanently connected to the tip-cup, and at the other end there are holes for the attaching tacks or pins 01 that are driven into the handle, and serve to hold the spring in position, and also the tip-cup, but said tip-cup can be drawn back, as usual, for inserting or removing the tips.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination of the tip-cup c and spiral spring (I, when constructed and arranged to operate substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The spring d surrounding the handle loosely, and connected at one end to such handle, in combination with the tip-cup sliding upon the handle, and against which the spring acts, as set forth.
Signed by me this this 10th day of June, A. D. 1875.
FELIX S. BROWN.
