December To all 'whom it may concern Beit known that I, THOMAS G. HoJER, of the city of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Umbrellas; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had t the accompanying drawings, and to the letters ot reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

Figure 1 is a plan view of the parts when the umbrella is open or raised. Fig. 2 is a plan View of the parts, showing the manner of releasing the supportingspring when the umbrella is to be closed, and Fig. 3 is a plan view of the parts when the umbrella is closed, and the cap adjusted upon the tips of the ribs, and Fig. 4 is a planview, with portions broken away to show aspiral or modified form of the slot in the sleeve. f

The object of ny invention is to combine with the runner provided with a lug, in such manner that the cup may be used to secure or release the tips of the ribs at pleasure, may also travel with-the ruimer in opening ted tube attached, be used to release the spring that supports the runner when the umbrella is up or opened.

In the drawings, A represents the stick of an umbrella, E the ribs. and F the braces. In the stick, a supporting-spring, lg; is .inserted in the ordinary mannerand upon it, in the usual way, the runner B, with its braces F, is placed. At a short distance below the terminus of the slot a in the runner, and in line with it, a lug, b, is attached, as clearly shown in all the figures.

The cup C for securing and releasing the tips of the ribs is made in the usual manner, as shown. It has attached a tube, D, provided with `\a slot, having short` slots d and f at either end, and running at right angles with it, as clearly shown in. all the figures. The tube Dis just large enough to slide freely upon the runner B and its slot e, of the requisite size to admit kthe lug b through it,

- When the parts are thus constructed and arranged the operation is as follows:

Supposing the umbrella to be closed, the

parts are in the position shown in Fig. 3-

that is, the tip-cup is upon or over the tips of left, when the lug will engage with the short' slot d at the upper end of the slot e, and then raise the umbrella by sliding the cap and runner together up the stick until the spring g projects through the slot a, in the runner, as shown in Fig.-l.

To Aclose the umbrella, turn the cup, with its tube, to the right till "the lug` is released, then push it forward, when the tube will compress the spring g, as shown in Fig. 2, and thus release the runner, when the umbrella may be closed, and the parts all be adjusted again, as shown in Fig. 3.

Instead of having the slot e in the form shown in Figs. l, 2,.and 3, it may be made in the spiral form shown in the sleeve D at c in Fig. 4,tand the tipcup, instead of being at the lower end, may be at or near the. middle ofthe sleeve, as shown in the same figure. When theslot is made thus spiral `in form a small lug, d', is attached to the sleeve, to limit the sleeve in its movement, and also to hold it in position when moved up or down.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- In combination with an umbrella-runner and an umbrella tip-cup fastener, a lug', b, at-

tached to the former, and a slotted tube or sleeve, D, attached to the latter, constructed and arranged substantially as herein described, and for the purpose set forth.
