To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ANDREW J. ROBINSON, of Boston, county of Suffolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Detachable U mbrella-Oovers, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representinglike parts.

In detachable umbrella covers one of the most difficult results to be accomplished is to provide suitable means at the central or stick receiving opening to exclude the water, and at the same time present a neat finished appearance. Such detachable covers are usually put up in small boxes for sale, and are made of different sizes to conform to the different standard lengths of ribs or frames to which they are or may be attached; but while the ribs are made of standard lengths or substantially so, they are connected to sticks which vary materially in diameter, there being no standard sizes. Hence while it is an easy matter to make covers which will fit the frames the difficulty arises in making a water tight central opening to fit the varying sizes of sticks. Attempts have been made to accomplish this result, as for instance by the employment of a flexible elastic washer or collar which would be self-conforming to the varying sizes of sticks, but such means are objectionable because the finished product is too cumbersome and unsightly and the life of the rubber is short. caps have also been provided which have been secured to the stick, or to the notch which is rigidly connected with the stick, and when such collars or caps coincidently snugly fit the stick they will exclude the water, but they are not adapted to be applied to an ordinary umbrella frame, requiring one of spe-. cial construction, and hence the specially constructed umbrella frame is sold with a detachable cover thereon.

This invention has for its object to construct a detachable cover for umbrellas, which may be sold independently of the frame and which may be made of the different standard sizes to fit the different standard sizes of Metallic collars or I water, and also present a neat finished appearance.

The means employed at the central opening of the cover which forms the essential feature of this invention consists of a ferrule composed of two separate parts or collars adapted to be connected together and to be supported upon the notch or held down on the stick by the means or devices which are provided at the outer edge of the cover for the purpose of connecting it with the ribs, one of said parts or collars being detachably connected with the other part, and snugly fitting the stick, and thereby constituting the water excluding cap or collar. This two part ferrule, or either part thereof, is connected with the cover so as to be detachable therewith if desired, that is to say, neither part of said ferrule has any connection with the stick other than snugly fitting or contacting therewith, nor is either part connected with the notch. The water excluding capsor collars are made up of several different sizes, that is to say, that part or portion of said caps or collars which contact with the stick is made of;

different sizes, so that from a number of such caps or collars one may be selected which will snugly fit the stick of the frame to which the cover is to be applied, and the 'two parts of the ferrule are not connected together until the particular water excluding cap or collar has been selected, and when so selected the two parts are or may be connected together so as to be thereafter removed with the cover as an entirety, or it maybe removed separately. With each cover or number of covers sold a number of such water excluding caps or collars of different sizes will be supplied so that the selection may be easily made.

The two part ferrule which constitutes the essential feature of my invention may be made in many different ways, so as to be connected together, or so that one may be sup- 5 ported upon or by the other, either with the cloth between them or connected with one or the other part.

Referring to Figs. 1 and 2, the cover a,l1aving sockets b at the outer edge for connecting it with the ribs are or may be of any suitable construction, but in lieu of said sockets any other means may be provided for se curing the outer edge of the cover to the ribs. At the central or stick receiving opening a two part ferrule is provided, one of which parts as c, is detachably connected with the other and is herein shown as made as a cap or collar having a cylindrical portion 0, of a standard diameter, and a cylindrical portion c of a lesser diameter adapted to snugly fit the stick, and said collar or cap is also herein shown as having at its lower end a flange c and the other part d is herein shown as a band or ring d, of a standard diameter'to fit upon the cylindrical portion 0', of the other part, and be frictionally held thereon, and said band or ring has at its lower end a flange (1 similar to the flange c. The material of the cover a, is or may be held in place between the flanges (Z c or may be secured in any other desirable way, as for instance it may be connected to the band or ring.-

The cap or collar 0 is one which may be selected from several to fit the stick to which the cover is to be applied and the several caps or collars from which the particular one is selected vary only in the internal diameter of the cylindrical portion c-, the diameter of the cylindrical portion 0', being the same in all instances.

The ring or collar cl may be secured to the cover if desired, but the caps or collars c are separate or independent, being selected when desired for use, and thereafter connected with the ring or collar d.

The cap or collar 0, in this instance of my invention constitutes the water excluding cap, as its cylindrical portion 0 snugly fits the stick, and the shape of said cap also gives a neat and finished appearance to the top of the umbrella. The cylindrical portion 0, is slitted to enhance the spring like action in order that the collar d may better hold itself frictionally thereon. In lieu of connecting said parts frictionally as herein shown it is obvious that they may be connected in any other desirable way, as by a bayonet joint connection, by screw threads or otherwise.

I do not desire to limit myself to the particular shape of the parts of the ferrule, as I desire to include within the spirit and scope of this invention, any form of two part ferrule wherein one part is made of metal and is detachably connected with the other part, and serves as a Water excluding cap, either furnishing a suitable rigid support or-seat for the other part, or being supported upon said other part.

Referring to Figs. 5, 6, and 7, a modified form of two part ferrule is shown, the water excluding cap being made substantially as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, but adapted to fit and be supported upon a collar or cap which maybe contained within it, said inner cap being slitted. This modification of my invention is shown separately in an application for Letters Patent filed by me Decemberlt), 1892, Serial No. 455,611. In this instance of my invention the cover is or may be connected with the inner cap or collar, while the outer cap or collar is detachable, and is to be selected from several to fit the stick.

I claim- 1. A detachable umbrella cover having means at the outer edge to connect it with the ribs, and a ferrule connected with the cover, composed of two pieces or collars, one of which has an enlarged cylindrical portion of a standard diameter and a contracted end portion to snugly fit the stick and thereby exclude the water, and the other of which is of a standard diameter to fit said enlarged cylindrical portion, substantially as described.

2. A detachable umbrella cover having means at the outer edge to connect it with the ribs, and a ferrule connected with the cover composed of two pieces orcollars, one of which has an enlarged cylindrical portion of astandard diameter, and a contracted end portion to snugly fit the stick and thereby exclude water, and the other of which is of a standard diameter to fit said enlarged cylindrical portion, and be thereby supported, the cloth held in position between said collars, and said con nected collars and cover being held down by the means employed to connect the outer edge of the cover to the ribs, substantially as described.

3. A detachable umbrella cover having means at the outer edge to connect it with the ribs, and a ferrule at the central or stick receiving opening composed of two separate collars, one of which has an enlarged cylindrical portion of a standard diameter slitted to thereby yield to receive the other, and hold it frictionally, one of said connected parts also having a contracted end portion to snugly fit the stick and thereby to exclude water, substantially as described.

a. A detachable umbrella cover having means at the outer edge for connecting it with the ribs, and the ferrule composed of an inner collar contracted at its upper end to snugly fit the stick, and having its lower end made of a standard diameter and an outer collar of a standard diameter placed thereon, the cloth being held in place between said collars, substantially as described.

5. A detachable umbrella cover having means at the outer edge for connecting it with the ribs, and the ferrule composed of an inner collar having an enlarged cylindrical portion of a standard diameter, and a contracted cylindrical portion of a size to snugly fit the stick, and an outer collar of a standard diameter to fit upon the enlarged cylindrical portion of the inner collar and be thereby held in position, substantially as described.

6. A detachable umbrella cover having means at the outer edge for connecting it with the ribs, and a ferrule at the central or stick receiving opening composed of two separate collars having flanges at their lower ends, one of said collars having a contracted portion to fit the stick and having an enlarged portion of a standard diameter to receive and support the other collar, the cloth being held in place between said flanges, substantially as described.

7. A detachable umbrella cover having means at the edge for connecting it with the ribs, and a ferrule at the central or stick re ceiving opening composed of an inner collar having an enlarged slitted cylindrical portion of a standard diameter, and a contracted cylindrical portion of a size to snugly fit the stick, and an outer collar of a standard diameter to be placed on said slitted portion of the inner collar, and thereby held frictionally, the cloth being held in place between said collars, substantially as described.
