This invention relates to improvements in elongated bags and while intended for use generally wherever it may be advantageously employed, it is particularly adapted as a container for golf clubs, in which connection it will be herein illustrated and described.

Objects of the invention are to provide a golf bag of simple construction, which may be manufactured at a low cost and which will be very strong and durable.

A further object is to provide a bag having a flexible wall and having a centrally positioned, longitudinally extending post secured at its op posite ends to the end members of the bag whereby the side wall will be maintained in its proper position without the aid of stays or other stiffening means.

A particular object is to provide a combination golf bag and umbrella holder having a centrally positioned, tubular post arranged to receive an umbrella or other articles, the post being connected to the end members of the bag to provide a strong, durable frame which will hold the side wall in shape and retain the same from longitudinal collapse.

The above objects are accomplished and additional ends are attained by the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, it being understood that the invention is capable of various adaptations and that changes and modifications may be made or resort had to substitutions which come within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.

In the drawing like characters of reference are employed to designate like parts as the same may appear in any of the several views and in which:

Figure 1 is a longitudinal, cross sectional view of a golf bag constructed in accordance with this invention, the same being taken as indicated by the lines 1-1 of Figure 2 and being shown with an umbrella positioned therein,

Figure 2 is a top plan view of same,

Figure 3 is a cross sectional view taken as indicated by the lines 33 of Figure 1.

Proceeding now to a detailed description of the invention with reference to the particular adaptation thereof disclosed in the drawing, the numeral 5 is used to denote a bottom or base member. The base member 5 as shown in the drawing is circular in form and is provided around the outer edge thereof with a downwardly projecting, circumferentially extending flange 55- 6. The central portion of the base member 5 is stamped downwardly to provide a centrally positioned socket 7.

The numeral 8 denotes a cylindrical post which is positioned with the lower end thereof suitably secured in the socket 7. The numeral 9 is used generally to denote the upper end member which is in the form of a spider having an outer ring 9a, an inner ring 9b and radially disposed connecting arms 90. While the end member 9 may be of any suitable construction, in the drawing I have illustrated the same as constructed of a stamping. The inner wall of the inner ring 9b is extended downwardly to form a sleeve 10 in which the upper end of the post is suitably secured. The post 8 may be threaded in the socket '7 and the sleeve or may be welded, riveted or otherwise suitably secured therein.

The numeral 11 denotes a side wall which is cylindrical in form and which is composed of leather, canvas or any suitable flexible material. The diameter of the wall 11 is such that the flange 6 is snugly received therein. The lower edge portion of the wall 11 is turned inwardly and upwardly against the inner face of the flange 6 and is glued, sewed, riveted or otherwise suitably secured thereto. As shown in the drawing the upper end portion of the bag is positioned through the ring 9a and is extended outwardly and downwardly to overlap itself below the ring, thereby forming a hem 12 which is sewed, riveted or otherwise suitably formed to enclose the ring 9a. The upper end portion of the bag 11 is thus secured to the ring 9a and the lower end of said bag is secured to the bottom member 5 so as to extend therebetween.

The numeral 13 denotes an umbrella which may be positioned within the tube 8. The arms 90 serve to separate the golf clubs so that clubs of one class may be kept separate from the clubs of another class.

The arms 90 and the ring 91) may be covered with leather, cloth or other suitable material which will prevent the club from being scratched or otherwise injured by being brought into contact therewith. The central, downwardly protruding portion of the basemember 5 may be provided with drainage openings 14. If desired, a suitable lid or cap (not shown) may be employed to close the upper end of the tube 8.

It will thus be seen that I have provided a golf bag having flexible side walls and having internally arranged supports whereby the side wall will at all times be held in its proper position and in which an umbrella or other article or articles may be carried.

Having thus illustrated my invention and described the same in detail, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. In a golf bag, a flexible tubular side wall, a rigid bottom permanently secured therein, said bottom member having a downwardly projecting, centrally positioned socket, a top member including concentric rings, radial arms connecting said rings, a rigid tube, the upper end of said tube rigidly secured in the inner ring of said top member and rigidly secured in said socket to extend centrally through the bag.

2. In a golf bag, a flexible tube forming a side wall, a bottom member, and a top member permanently secured thereto, said top member including an outer ring, a centrally positioned collar and spaced radial arms connecting said collar to said ring, said bottom member stamped downwardly to provide a centrally positioned, cylindrical socket and a rigid tube having the upper end thereof rigidly secured in said collar and having the lower end thereof rigidly secured in said socket.

3. In a golf bag, a flexible tube forming a side wall, a rigid bottom member permanently secured in the lower end of said tube, a rigid top member secured in the upper end of said tube, said top member having an outer ring, a centrally positioned collar and arms rigidly connecting said collar to said ring, said bottom member having a centrally positioned socket projecting downwardly therein and a rigid post rigidly secured in said collar and said socket.
