an-mammal: FOR; UMBRELLAS.
To all whom it concern Be it known that I, CHARLES J ,MADONNA, a citizen of the United 7 States, and a ,re'sident of the city of New. .York, borouglilof Brooklymin the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new andlmproved Drip-Receptacle for'Umbrellas, of which the following is a full, clear, and .exact description. 1; p
An. object of the invention is to provide a new and improved dripreceptacle for umbrellas arranged to receive and retain the water flowing down thecovering of an um brella at the time the latter is stood up or hung on a rack, thus preventingfthe drip water from flowing onto and soiling the floorr Another object is to lprovideasimple device-which can bereadilywplaced in position on the terminal of the; umbrella stick or can be removed therefrom, and when in position on the stickterminal can bereadily folded to take up very little .room and without forming an unsightly attachment. In order to accomplish the desired result use is made 'ofa'lcup having an attaching hub adapted to engage the terminal of the umbrellastiok to hold the 'drip receptacle in place, a collar for the passage of the said terminal and I a tubular covering attached at its endsv to the said cup and the "said collar.
A practical embodiment of: the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part, of this specification, in
which similar characters of reference indiceptacle, for the drip water.
the receptacle after being filled may be cate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure l is a sectional side elevation of the drip receptacle as applied to an umbrella in extended position for the reception of the drip water; Fig. 2 is a plan View of the drip receptacle; Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the drip receptacle as applied and in folded position; Fig. 4 is a sectional side elevation of a modified form of the drip receptacle as applied and in extended position for the reception of the drip water; Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the same in folded position; Fig. 6 is a sectional plan view of the same on the line 66 Of Fig.4;
K and Fig. 7 is a similar View of the same on the line 77 of Fig. 4.
A cup A, preferably made of metal, is provided at its bottom with a hub B provided interiorly with a ring C, of rubber or other suitable elastic material, to clampingly engage the terminal of the stick D of the umbrella, as plainly indicated in 1.
, specification of Fetter a i hpl lication filed December 13} 1913.; Serial Na 806,510-
covering F, preferably, of rubber orother suitable flexible or elastic material. The other end of the covering Ffits into an an nularrecess G formed exteriorly in a collar rubber or other similar material, for clampingly engaging the, terminal of the stickD near' the outer end thereof. The cup A is provided intermediate the hub B and the 'repass from the cup A intothe drip receptacle.
terminal of the stick D, as plainly indicated in Fig. 1, so that the cup Ais adjacent the crown of the umbrella while the collar G is located near. the terminal ofthe stick D. Now any :water that flows down the covering of the'umbrella passes into the cup A and flows from the latter through the openings F and collar Gr around the terminal ofjthe stick D .so that the water accumulates in the said receptaclefandis thus prevented from flowing onto a floor orother surface. After the umbrella is dry it is tilted into an ape of the same by way of the apertures I and thecup A into a spitt'oon, sink or other reslipped off the terminal of the, stick D and tacle. I
Instead of removing the drip receptacle for use after rain, the said drip'receptacle may be permanently left in position on the brella while holding the collar G the covering F may be twisted into-folded position,
tacle does not form an unsightly attachment on the umbrella. o
In the modified form shown in Figs. .4, 5,6
and 7 the cup Jis provided with a hub J and apertures J and the cup J is also provided with an interior retaining ring K,
similar to the ring G previously mentioned,
and from the ring K extends a sleeveL Patented Sept. 8,1914.
G provided interiorly with'sa'firing H, of i cess 'E-iwith apertures I to allow water to In orderto use. the drip receptacle the operator slips thedevice into p0sitionon'the umbrella, and by slightly turning the umas shown in Fig; 3, so that the drip"recep The provided intermediate the hub i B and the top of the cup with an annular recess E into-which fitsone end ofa tubular .80 I into the receptacle formed by the covering proximately horizontal position to allowthe water contained in the receptacle to, flow out 0 If desired,
its contents drainedinto a suitable recep I I from the umbrella and replacing it thereon through which passes the terminal of the stick D of the umbrella. on the cup J is secured one end of. the covering N attached at its other end to a collar 0 mounted to slide on the sleeve L and limited in its outward movement thereon by a stop flange. formed on the outerend of. thesleeve L. The collarC is'provided with a ring P, of rubber'or other material, and also with flat springs Q adapted to hear at their ends on the. exterior surfaceof the: sleeve -L- to hold the collar 0 inposition on the sleeve L intowhich it ismovediby. the. operator.- The collar 0 is connected by a 'number of fiatcurvedspringslt with the cup J so as to hold the covering N in extended position at the-time.-.the collar 0 is movedupward on tliesleeve L intovthe position shown in Fig. 4. It willbe noticed that in this mentioned. W hen the receptacle is not used for receiving the drip water the operator slides the collar 0 outward until it abuts against-the stop collar L, and in doing so the springs R are relaxed to allow a relaX- ing of the. covering N, as shown in Fig. 5, thereby holding the covering in a'folded position without forming an unsightly attachmentto theunibrella.
The drip receptacleshown'and described isvery. simple and durable in construction and can be readily placed in position on the umbrella stick or removed therefrom whenevery it is desired to doso. l
Having thus described mys-invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Let tersPatent: l-
, 1. A. drip receptacle for umbrellas, tcoma prising a cup having an exterior annular recess and provided With an attaching huh at its bottom, and apertures in the said bottom and leading to the exterior of the hub,
