UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN J. BARDON, OF PHILADELPHIA,PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO WILLIAM B. MORRELL, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
UMBRELLA.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 13, 1909.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN J. BARDON, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Umbrella, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of an umbrella hav-- in g novel means for connecting the ribs and stretcher-s with caps respectively on the stick and runner without wiring, the said means also permitting the ready disconnection of the ribs and stretchers for the purposes of repairs and replacement of new ribs and stretchers, as will be described more fully hereafter.
For the purpose of explaining the invention, the accompanying drawing illustrates a satisfactory reduction of the same to practice, but the important instrumentalities thereof may be varied, and so it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific arrangement and organization shown and described.
Figures 1 and 5 represent longitudinal sections of portions of an umbrella embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a bottom plan view of the upper cap employed. Fig. 3 represents a side elevation of a portion of. a rib employed. Fig. i represents a plan view of a spider employed.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings :A designates a cap which consists of a body formed of upper and lower sections Band C fitted one on the other, the lower section being provided with an upwardly-extending sleeve or tubular member D, which is firmly secured to said lower section and receives the stick E of an umbrella, said lower section being also provided with a collar F comprising a downward extension of the sleeve D, which collar is fastened to the stick, said sections being detachably connected by the lap joint G or other suitable means.
H designates the ferrule of the umbrella, which is fitted on the stick and sleeve D and has its inner side formed with screw-threads which engage screw-threads on the exterior of said sleeve. The lower section of the cap has radial slots J therein for the passage therethrough of the inner or upper ends of the ribs K of an umbrella. Within the cap is a spider L, which is formed of a plate with circular slots M therein, and a central opening N to receive the sleeve D, the latter having a shoulder D on which said spider is seated and rested, Above said spider is the washer P, the same having an opening centrally therein so as to be fitted on the sleeve D. The inner ends of the ribs K are formed with hooks Q, which are adapted to pass through the slots J of the cap and slots M of the spider L and to be fitted on the circumferential wall or rim R of said spider.
In assembling the parts, the operation is as follows :The sections B, C are separated and the section G is fitted on a stick and secured thereto by the rivet or" pin S passed through the collar E into the stick. The spider is then inserted in said section and placed on the shoulder D of the sleeve D and the hooks of the ribs K are passed through the slots J of said section and the slots M of the spider L. The ribs are then turned, whereby the hooks Q, are fitted on the rim R of the spider, thus connecting the ribs with the latter and providing hinges for the ribs adapting them to move through the slots J while turning on the rim It as hinges in the closing and opening motions of the umbrella. The washer P is now placed on the sleeve over the hooks Q, the washer thus preventing disengagement of the ribs from the spider, after which the section B is fitted on the section C and the ferrule H screwed on the sleeve and consequently against the cover of the umbrella, thus also holding the upper section of the cap against the lower section preventing rising of the former, the ribs thus being retained in position within the cap and consequently attached to the stick with the capability of motions usual in umbrellas, wiring of the ribs, as is evident, being dispensed-with.
When the ferrule is unscrewed, the upper section of the cap may be raised and the washer removed, when the ribs may be turned so as to be disengaged from the rim R and then drawn through the slots J, whereby they are entirely disconnected for purposes of repairs and replacement. The runner T is connected with the cap U, which is formed of sections or members connected by a threaded joint V, and contains the spider \V and washer X in reverse order to similar members in the upper cap A. The upper section of the cap has radial slots U therein to receive the lower portions of the stretchers Y which are formed with hooks Z adapted to be engaged with the rim of the spider V similar to the hooks of the ribs, it being evident that the stretchers are connected with the cap and runner without wiring and may move with the runner and ribs as usual. The cap may be separated by unscrewing the upper member thereof, when the stretchers may be disconnected from the spider for the purposes of repairs and replacement.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A fastening for the rib of an umbrella with the stick thereof composed of a cap formed of detachable sections, a slot in one of said sections and a spider in the cap, the rib being provided with a hooked end passed through said slot and engaged with said spider.
2. A fastening for the rib of an umbrella with the stick thereof composed of a cap formed of detachable sections, a slot in one of said sections, and a spider and a washer in the cap, the rib being provided with a hooked end adapted to be passed through said slot and engaged with said spider, and said washer to control the engaging end of said rib and the spider having circumferential rim with which the hook of the rib engages.
3. A fastening for the rib of an umbrella with the stick thereof composed of a cap formed in sections, one section being connectible with said stick, a tube or sleeve on said section independent of the connection between said sections and passing freely through the other section, and a removable ferrule adapted to engage said sleeve.
4.. A fastening for a stretcher of an umbrella with the runner thereof composed of a cap of detachably connected sections attachable to the runner, one section being connectible with the stick, a slot in one sec tion through which the end of the stretcher may be inserted, and a spider within said cap, said spider being adapted to have the stretcher engaged therewith.
5. A fastener for a stretcher of an umbrella with the runner thereof composed of a sectional cap attachable to the runner, the sections of the cap being adapted to be connected as one and disconnected, a slot in one section, and a spider and a washer in the cap, the stretcher being provided with a hooked end passed through said slot, en gaged with said spider and have its engaged end controlled by said washer the end of the stretcher being confined between the spider and the washer.
6. In an umbrella fastener of the character stated, a cap and a spider therein, the latter having a central opening to receive a sleeve on said cap, and a slotintermediate of the center and periphery forming a rim for engagement of a rib or stretcher member of the umbrella and means within the cap mounted on said sleeve and having slots to receive the ends of the ribs or stretchers.
7. In a fastener for a stretcher, a cap formed in sections, a sleeve on one section thereof adapted to pass freely through the other section, the latter having a slot in its peripheral wall for the inserting of a rib member therethrough, means for connecting said sections, a spider provided with means for connection therewith, said sleeve being provided with a seat for said spider and means within the cap embracing the said sleeve and bearing on the end of the rib member.
8. A. fastening for an umbrella member, the same comprisng a cap in sections detachably connected by lapped joint, the lower section having a sleeve and slots, the sleeve passing through the outer section, a spider within the cap mounted upon the sleeve and having circular slots and circumferential rim, a ferrule having threaded engagement with the sleeve above the outer section, and a washer on the sleeve and disposed within the cap sections and adapted to bear upon the ends of the umbrella mem ber engaged in the slots of the spider.
