- x Q 61a UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LAWRENCE MAUCH, OF SUNDANOE, WYOMING.
KEY-RING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 505,882, dated October 3, 1893.
Application filed May 13, 18 9 3.
T0 aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LAWRENCE MAUCH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sundance,in the county of Orook,State of Wyoming, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Key-Rings, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in key rings of that class in which the ends of a broken ring are connected by some form of coupling which will permit of ready separation thereof to permit of a key being placed upon or taken 01f the ring.
It has for its objects among others to provide a simple, cheap and serviceable key ring of few parts and those readily assembled, not liable to get out of order, yet easily manipulated to place a key upon the ring or to remove one therefrom.
Other obj ects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear and the novel features thereof will be specifically defined by the appended claim.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification and in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved key ring with the ends separated. Fig. 2 is a side elevation with the ends coupled, showing the coupling sleeve in longitudinal section. Fig. 3 is an enlarged perspective of the coupling and the ends of the ring. Fig. 4: is a sectional view of a slightly modified form of coupling.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views.
Referring now to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a ring or loop of suitable material as round wire of the proper size and character, having at one end the screw threads a, and at the other end the head a having preferably a fiat or square shoulder as seen at a to have a fiat bearing against the inner end of the coupling as shown in Figs. 2 and 4.
B is the coupling; it may be of any suitable material and is preferably in the form of a Serial No. 474,066. (No model.)
cylinder having at one end an opening I) through which passes one end of the ring or loop which as will of course be understood is not a complete ring or loop but is divided as shown at A, and against the inner face of this end the fiat or square shoulder of the head a engages as shown in Figs. land 4. The other end of the cylinder is provided with a nut G which is fitted therein and adapted to receive the threaded end of the ring or loop Aas seen in Fig, 2. This nut is removably held within the end of the coupling; preferably being threaded upon its periphery to engage interior threads on the cylinder as shown in Fig. 4. The threaded end of the ring or loop is integrally larger than the remaining portion of the ring or loop as shown in Fig. 4 to enable me to employ larger threads and thus increase the life of the same.
The parts are assembled by first sleeving the coupling B upon the end of the ring or loop and sliding it around until the cap 17. engages the inner end of the coupling as shown in Fig. 2, and then the nut O is placed within the other end of the coupling and secured, when the device is ready for use. To place a key upon the ring the coupling is screwed off the threaded end of the ring or loop as seen in Fig. 1. The key is then placed upon the threaded end and the latter engaged with the nut as shown in Fig. 2 and screwed up sufficiently to prevent disengagement of the parts. The cylinder may serve as a means upon which the name may be engraved if desired.
It is deemed important that the nut be removably held within the end of the cylinder and that the threaded end of the loop or rind be integrally enlarged so that the threads formed thereon may be made deeper and heavier so as to be less liable to be worn to any great extent by continued use. The removable nut permits of ready assembling of the parts.
I am aware that an open ring or loop has been formed with a head upon one end and a thread at the other to be engaged by a coupling sleeve or portion and do not seek to cover such a construction broadly, the gist of the present invention residing in the removable nut and the integrally-enlarged end of tha loop or ring for the purposes above speei- What I claim as new is The key ring described, consisting of an open loop or ring having at one end a cap and at the other end screw threads, a tubular coupling having at one end an opening through which the ring loosely passes, and a nut exteriorly and interiorly threaded and removably engaged with interior threads in the other end of the coupling and receiving the threaded end of the ring or loop, the end on which the threads are formed being integrally of greater diameter than the body portion of the ring or loop, the cap of the loop being loosely held Within the coupling and held against displacement by the end of said coupling, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence 'of two Witnesses.
