H. G. BOYNTON & C. H. FRAVEL.
STOPPER FOR JUGS,
No. 602,822. Patented Apr. 26, 1898..
vi/weooeo UNITED STATES PATENT OrricE.
HORACE G. BOYNTON AND CHARLES H. FRAVEL, OF NEW ALBANY, OHIO.
STOPPER FOR JUGS.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent NO. 602,822, dated April 26, 1898.
Application filed August 1'7, 1897. Serial No. 648,561. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, HORACE G. BOYNTON and CHARLES H. FRAVEL, citizens of the United States, residing at New Albany, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stoppers for Jugs; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of our invention is to provide an improved stopper for jugs and similar vessels having a handle to which the stopper may be connected to prevent its loss.
In the annexed drawings, Figure 1 shows a sectional view of a stopper according to our invention fitted in the neck of a fragment of a jug. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view of the stopper on aplane indicated by the line 02 w of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of a modification of our invention.
Like characters in the several views designate parts that correspond.
In Figs. 1 and 2 the form of stopper shown is adapted to have but one of its ends inserted in the mouth of the jug 8, and in Fig. 3 either end of the stopper may be used for this purpose and so prolong the usefulness of the stopper.
In Fig. 1 the character 1 designates a body of wood that has an axially-projecting stem or core 2. Upon the end of this is placed and secured by pin 4. a hard elastic rubber thimble 3, that is designed and adapted to enter and close the mouth of the jug. This thimble is of such length that a space is left between its upper end and the shoulder at the under side of the portion 1, in which a continuous metallic ring 5 is placed. The ring 5 is loose in its seat on the stopper, so that the latter may be rotated in the ring. To the ring 5 we attach another split ring or loop 6 of suflicient size to engage the handle 7 of the 311 lhe reversible stopper shown in Fig. 3 is the same as that shown in Fig. 1, except that in the place of the Wooden portion 1 we have a core 2 and fit and fasten in like manner upon it a thimble 3 corresponding to the thimble 3, and the ring 6 instead of being passed through a hole in the ring 5 is attached to an eye 9, the shank of which passes loosely through the ring 5 and is secured in place by a head 9.
When the ring 6 of the form of stopper shown in Fig. 3 is attached to the handle of the jug, the stopper may not only be placed and turned in the mouth of the jug, but may be turned over and either end used for closing the mouth of the jug.
What we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A stopper comprising a core 2, elastic thimbles placed thereon, an eye 9 swiveled in said stopper, and a ring 6 in said eye for connecting said stopper to the handle of a jug or similar vessel.
2. A stopper comprising a core 2, elastic thimbles 3 3 secured to said core, a ring 5 loose on said core having a swiveled eye 9, and a link 6 in said eye for attaching the stopper to the handle of a jug or similar vessel.
3. A stopper for jugs and similar vessels comprising two parts with means for connecting those parts so as to form a channel or groove between them, a loose ring in said groove or channel, and a loop for connecting said ring with the handle of the jug.
A-stopper for jugs and similar vessels comprising an upper part and a lower part of elastic material with means for connecting said parts so as to form a channel or groove between them, a loose ring in said channel or groove, and a loop for connecting said ring with the handle of the vessel.
In witness whereof We have hereunto set our hands this 19th day of June, 1897.
HORACE G. BOYNTON. CHARLES H. FRAVEL. Witnesses:
I-I. BOYNTON, B. M. ALBERY.
