SPECIFICATION forming part o'f Letters Patent No. 390,900, dated October 9, 1888.
Application filed December 29, 1887. Serial No. 259,344. (No model.) Patented in Austria-Hungary August 6, 1887, No. 7,205 and To @ZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MAX BEICHWEIN, a subject of the King of Bavaria,residing at Vienna, in the Province of Lower Austria, in the Empire of Austria-Hungary, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Umbrella or Parasol Tips; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention,such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in umbrellas or parasols, and has for its object a cheap, durable, and ornamental tip for the ribs thereof.
The invention consists of knobs or bulbs, of wood, metal, or other suitable material, connected with tubular stems, the latter being adapted to be secured to the ribs, said knobs and stems being covered with fabric, woven, knitted, or spun, and applied over the same as herein set forth and claimed.
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of an umbrella or parasol tip embodying my invention. Fig. 2represents a longitudinal section thereof. Fig. 3 represents a partial side elevation and partial longitudinal section thereof, including a portion of a rib to which the tip is attached.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings, a represents a knob or bulb, formed of wood, metal, or other suitable material; and b represents a stem which is screwed or otherwise secured to said knob, and partly or entirely tubular, it being shown partly tubular, as at b2. The knob and stem are covered with fabric a, which may be woven, knitted, or spun, and of a size to closely encircle or tit said knob and stem.
If desired,the knob may be covered and the stem left uncovered, or vice versa, or a part of either the knob and stem or both may be left uncovered, whereby it is evident there may be variety in the covering or decoration of the tip, and the same may harmonize with the ma terial and color of the umbrella or parasol.
The tip is applied to the end of a rib, c, as seen in Fig. 3, and may be secured thereto by means of a wire or string passed through the openings b C2 in the stem and rib respectively.
When the covering of the tip is worn, the tip may be removed and re-covered or replaced by a freshly-covered tip.
I am aware that tips7 have been covered with silk, satin, &c. but such materials, so far as known, have been fastened thereto with paste, glue, or other adhesive substance, and as a base for a composition or covering of varnish or other substances; and I am also aware that the ribs of umbrellas and parasols have been covered 'by a braided fabric, but I am not aware that tips have been so covered; neither am I aware that tips have been covered as herein set forth and claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. As a new article `of manufacture, a tip for an umbrella or parasol,consisting of a bulb and stem having an outer covering of woven, knit,or spun fabric, substantially as described.
2. A tip for an umbrella or parasol, consisting of a bulb and a tubular stein, and having an outer covering ofknit or woven fabric conforming to the contour of said stem and bulb, said parts combined substantially as described.
3. A new article of manufacture, consisting o f an umbrella-tip having a bulb end portion and a conical tubular stem portion, the said bulb and stem having an 4outer covering of knitted fabric, substantially as described.
