IMPROVEMENT IN UMBRELLA-COVERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 143,297, dated September 30, 1873; application filed August 15, 1873.

i To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, DAVID W. ODroRNE, of Elizabeth, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented an Improvement in Umbrellas and Parasols, of which the following is a correct specification:

In the manufacture of umbrellas and parasols it is usual to cut out the sections or gores of fibrous material and sew them together, leaving a central hole for the umbrella stick or handle, and at this point it is usual to secure the fabric to the stick or to a metal thimble near the crown by binding the ends of the gores together by a winding of thread, and often sewing is resorted to to draw the fabric sufficiently tight and to securely fasten the ends of the gores. This operation is expen-. sive, it is not usually of a handsome or ornamental appearance, and having to be done after the umbrella'cover is applied to the frame increases the difficulties of workmanship. My

invention is made for obviating these difliculties; and consists in a metallic eyelet of a size for the handle or stick to pass through applied to the cover at the center, which eyelet unites all the sections firmly together and protects the fabric of the cover from injury at this point, and allows of the cover being prepared complete and ready for attachment to the frame.

The gores or sections a a are of silk or other They are of the desired sizes and shapes, and sewn together as usual. The metallic eyelet b is of a size large enough to go over the stick or handle of the umbrella, and this eyelet is inserted through the center of the cover, the fabric being spread out evenly all around the eyelet. The edges of the eyelet are turned over by a suitable mechanism to clamp and hold the fabric. I prefer to employ the washer or ring 0, that may be of wire or other material, and. draw the ends of the sections through this ring previously to turning over the end of the eyelet to secure the parts firmly in place.

I claim as my invention- 1. The umbrella 0r parasol cover made with a metallic eyelet at the center to unite the sections of fibrous materials, substantially as set forth.

2. The washer or ring 0, combined with the metallic eyelet b, for securing the sections a of the cover together at the center, substantially as set forth.
