Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK MAASS, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN MOLDS FOR FANCY BUTTONS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 143,916, dated October 21, 1873; application filed September 13, 1873. r
To all whom it may concern:
7 Be it known that I, FREDERICK MAAss, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Molds for Fancy Buttons, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a top view of one of my improved molds uncovered. Fig. 2 is a detail section of the same taken through the line as m, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a top view of the same covered. Fig. 4 is a detail section of the same taken through the line y 3 Fig. 3. I
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved fancy button, the mold of which shall be so formed that the cover may be put on, held in place, and ornamented with cord or thread without sewing. The invention consists in the grooves formed in the outer surface of the molds, and in the cords or threads in combination with the grooves of the molds, for securing the cover in place upon said molds, as hereinafter fully described.
A represents a mold, which is formed in the ordinary way, and the outer surface of which may be convex or flat, as may be desired, and which has a hole, a formed through its center. In the outer surface of the mold A are formed six, more or less, radial grooves, 0, which grooves extend across the edge of the said mold, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. B is the cover, which may be cloth or other suitable material, and which is spread over the outer surface of the mold A, and its edges are drawn together upon the inner surface of said mold, either with or without a puckering thread, as may be desired. G is a cord or thread, which is passed through a hole, ed, in the center of the mold A, and drawn into the grooves a of said mold, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4.. The grooves (0 thus keep the cord or thread 0 in place, and also partially sink it beneath the surface of said mold, so that it may be less subject to wear. The cord or thread 0 not only ornaments the button and holds the cover smoothly and closely to the outer surface of the mold, but it also strengthens the cover and enables it to be more firmly sewed to the garment, as the thread may be passed around or through the cords G as well as through the inner part of the cover 13.
Having thus desoribed'my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by LettersPatent- 1. The grooves a, formed in the outer surface of the molds A, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The cords or threads C, in combination with the grooves a of the molds A, for securing the coverB in place upon said molds, substantially as herein shown and described.
FREDERICK MAASS.
