METHOD OF MAKING BUTTON-=HOLES IN LEATHER GLOVES.
EPECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 335,865, dated February 9. 1886.
Application filed September 19, 1885. Serial No. 177,516. (No model.) Patented in England November 13,1884, No. 14,983.
T0 aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J osErH WI-IITBY, of the firm of \Vhitby Brothers, of Yeovil, in the county of Somerset, England, glove-manufacturers, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Method of Making Button-Holes in Leather Gloves, of which the following isa full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to animproved method of making button'holes in leather gloves; and the object of it is to make the buttonholes stronger, thinner, and more ornamental than usual, and to use sewing-machines instead of hand-work, wholly or partly. For this purpose I employ woven or other fabric of silk, wool, cotton, linen, or other material to bind the edges of the button-hole, instead of leather, as generally used' hitherto.
In some cases I employ leather in combination with fabrics described above or alone, but I attach it to the glove by a new method. I employ stitches, which penetrate the material both of the glove itself and also of the bind ing, and I surround the buttoniiole with a ring or two or more rings of such stitches. These stitches are most conveniently made by a sewing-machine, but may be made by hand.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification,
in which similar letters of reference indicate are like views of another button-hole.
The buttonhole shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3 is made with a binding, a, of linen cloth sewed to the edges, and surrounded with two rings of stitches, b. The button-hole shown in Figs. 4, 5, and 6 is a simple backing of leather 0, attached to the glove by one ring of stitches, d.
The drawings show the nature of the in vention and the method of carrying it into effect, but other forms and combinations are possible. The binding and backing piece 0 (shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3) has a button-hole slot in it, and the edge of the button-hole in the glove is turned inward, and the edge of the button-hole in the piece 0 isplaced against this turned-in portion of the glove, and stitches are passed through both turned edges, as" shown in Fig. 3. The piece 0 is then laid fiat upon the inner face of glove and stitched thereto by one or more rows of stitches, b, as shown.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of the said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is- The method of making button-holes which consists in turning the edge of the material of the article at the button-hole inward, then turning in the binding and backing piece at the edge of the button-hole to lie upon the turnedin portion of the article, then stitching through the two turned-in portions, and, finally, stitching the binding and backing piece to the inner face of the article beyond the but ton-hole, substantially as shown and described.
The foregoing specification of my improve ment in a method of working button-holes in leather gloves signed by me this 14th day of July, 1885.
JOSEPH IVHITBY.
