UNITED STATES PATENT ()EFIGE.
MARKS LEVIN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
VEST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 268,417, dated December 5, 1882. Application filed August 16, 1882. (Model.)
To all whom it mag concern:
Be it known that I, MARKS LEVIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city, county, and State of New York, have in ven ted a new and usefulVest-G'rarment; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the trade to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to that kind of wearing-apparel commonly designated a vest, and the object of my invention is to provide, first, a recess or receptacle on a vest for a folding lapel; second, a changeable lapel; and, third, an attachment by which'this lapel may be folded away out of sight into the recess or receptacle on the reverse side of the vest.
Heretofore vests were made with plain lapels, bound or unbound, being merely a continuation and part of the garment itself; or they were made with a folding lapel attached to the garment, so as to fold on and over the exposed side of the vest. I attain the object of my invention by the receptacle and appliance illustrated in the.aecompanying drawings.
In Figure 1 is shown the vest with a plain lapel as a part of the garment itself. Fig. 2 shows the vest with the folding lapel turned over upon the vest; and Fig. 3 shows the recess or receptacle into which the turning lapel may be folded out of sight on the inner or reverse side of the vest.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
To accomplish my invention I make up a vest with a plain lapel, A, bound or unbound, as a part of the cloth proper composing the garment, thus forming at the same time the collar of the vest, as shown in Fig. 1. To the inner or reverse side of the vest I then affix a strip of lining or other cloth material, B, attached or sewed to thegarment, so that one edge of the strip will run along evenly with the edge of the plain lapel or collar of the vest and sewed, so that the ends of the strip are made fast a little above the first button on one side and a little above the first button-hole on the other side; and also sew the edge or line of the strip B to the vest between these points, thus forming a receptacle or pocket, (3, with theedge of the strip on a line with the edge of the collar or plain lapel A. The width of this strip B must be a little wider than the folding lapel D, to be attached thereto, as hereinafter desoribed,so that the foldinglapel, when placed into the recess or receptacle 0, may not be crowded, but may lie flat and conform to the fold of the collar A. Then I cut a lapel, D, from vesting or other cloth, ot' the shape or style desired, and afiix or sew its lower or untrimmed edge to the strip B on a line with the collar or plain lapel A, so that the right side of the folding lapel D may, when in use, rest naturally on the vest. Tue vest is then complete; and when I desire to wear it with a plain lapel or collar, as shown in Fig. 1, l turnthe folding lapel D into the recess or receptacle 0, out of sight, and the vest will present the appearance on the wearer of aplain unlapelled vest; but when I desire to wear it with a folding lapel I take out the lapel D from the receptacle G and fold it over the collar A of the vest, and the vest will then present the appearance of a full-lapelled vest, and will hide the collar A.
Having fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. The combination, in a vest-garment, of a receptacle or recess, 0, with a folding lapel, l), substantially as set forth.
2. In a vest-garment, the combination of the lapel D with the receptacle 0, substantially as set forth.
I MARKS LEVIN.
Witnesses:
BART F. J oNEs, LOUIS WaoNKEa.
