UMBRELLA AND PARASOL TIE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 248,108, dated October 11, 1881.
Application filed June 28, 1881.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DAVID W. ODIORNE, of Elizabeth, in the county ofUnion and State of New Jersey, have invented an Improvement in Umbrella and Parasol Ties, of which the following is a specification.
To hold umbrella-covers when the umbrella -is closed and the cover rolled a tie is employed.
This is usually a strip of ribbon, braid, orother fabric with a ring sewed at the end, that passes over a button sewedat the junction of the tie with the cover, and in many instances a loop at the end of the tie aids in drawing the tie around the umbrella and button.
My improvement relates to the manner of making the tie, as hereinafter described, whereby sewing'is dispensed with in attaching the ring and a much stronger and more convenient tie is made than those heretofore constructed.
The material composing the tie maybe of any desired character, such as a braid or ribbon; but I prefer to use a strip of the fabric corresponding to the covering of the umbrella or parasol, folded, the edges turned in and stitched near each edge. fabric, connects the two thicknesses of fabric together, and forms a ring for the button or other fastening that is sewed to the junction of the tie with the umbrella-cover. The strip is out off at d, thus forming the separate ties, as shown in Fig. 2, that are salable as an article of merchandise, or may be applied directly to the umbrella or parasol.
The eyelet is represented in Fig. 3 adapted to be placed inthe elliptical opening ofthe tie.
In consequence of folding the fabric back upon itself a loop is formed at the end, and the tie has a finished appearance, instead of the end being rough and liable to fray out.
I claim as my inventiou 1. In an umbrella or parasol tie, a strip of fabric folded back upon itself at one end and an eyelet-ring inserted through both folds, as set forth.
2. The method of manufacturing umbrella and parasol ties, consisting in folding and sewing the fabric into a strip, perforating the same with elliptical holes in pairs, folding the strip between the holes, introducing an eyelet, and spreading and flattening the same to attach theparts together and form a ring, substantially as set forth. 1
