OF NEW HAVEN,
HEAD-COVERING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May *7 1918.
Application filed May 15, 1917. Serial No. 168,900.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ABRAHAM Crannnov, and HYuAN STEIN, citizens of Russia, and ELIAS RUBEN, a citizen of the United States, all residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Head-Coverings, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
Our present invention consists of a new and useful improvement in an article of wearing apparel designed to be serviceable, neat in appearance, close fitting and capable of being stored away into a small compass when not in use. The improved article or device is useful for covering the throat, neck and parts of the head of the wearer which are usually left exposed when ordinary apparel is worn.
According to our invention the aforesaid article or device is constructed of sections, each formed of one or more pieces stitche or otherwise joined together and arranged to closely fit and cover the human head, neck and throat, leaving exposed the entire face and part of the top of the head. Said sections are each made of a continuous piece of woven cloth cut into the required shape having extended ends which are united by stitches, or otherwise, or if desired, instead of woven cloth knitted or other suitable material may be employed. The sections both terminate in flaps which fit around the throat under the chin and are provided with means for fastening the flaps together beneath the chin which is not covered, an
to give additional protection for the ears and throat covered by said flaps, the latter can be padded or lined.
To these, and other ends, our invention consists in the head covering having oertain details of construction as will be hereinafter described and more particularly ointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, in which like numerals of reference designate like parts in both figures;
Figure 1 is a view of our improved head c'overingas applied; and
Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective view thereof.
In the practice of our invention, we construct-the device of apluralit of sections of fabric, severally designated erein by the when not in use the minimum space,
numerals 1 and 2, forming a covering having an opening 3 therethrough, and the lower ends of the sections terminating into flaps and being provided with fasteners 4, of any preferred form. The edges of these sections may be provided either with a reinforcing member or binding 5 or by hemming the same, the former method being preferable.
The material of which this head covering is made is preferably of light weight, thin wool fabric, in order that it may occupy;
anc be so light in weight as not to cause the wearer any inconvenience to carry it, and when placed over the head will not be so bulky or cumbersome as to necessitate a larger size hat when the head covering is being worn.
This head covering is applied substantially as shown in Fig. 1, all portions of the head except the face being covered, and a portion of the back of the head, that is usually covered by the hair, and always by a hat after the same is placed in position.
The fasteners 4 are so placed and arranged that the ends of the sections are easily secured together beneath the chin at a point readily accessible.
With this improved device the head, neck and throat are kept warm and the possibility of frost-bites upon exposed parts is reduced to a minimum. It also provides additional protection for the throat.
At the lower or flap portion of the sections, we can attach, and do in some cases, an inner lining 6 of fur, heavy wool, or similar material, as an additional protection for the neck, throat, cheek and ears.
The device may also be provided with small openings 7 so as to not too seriously interfere with the transmission of sound to the wearers ears.
This device is simple in its structure, can be produced at the minimum cost, is convenient to carry, and is easily applied, also providing the maximum protectlon to the wearer, and said device has the particular advantage or advantages that it may be conveniently worn as an auxiliary head covering in conjunction with the ordinary hat or ca the flap portions or extensions herein re erred to forming retaining bands which pass over and around the head of the wearer. Said re bands being with- .of he out our article Worn by'a person with his usual size of hat or cap.
A further "advantage 01 the improved device is-that by reason of the shape an'dar* rangement of the sections and retaining bands, the article fits the head perfectly and is therefore self-clinging even when the fastening devices. are loosened.
We are aware that it vis old to provide broadly, limiting ourselves to, the construction substantially. as herein shown and described .wherein al'l lastic elements, etc-.,
have been entirely'feliminatedg Having described our invention,- what we claim as new and desire to secure'by Letters Patent, is}:,' I v A f 1. An article of manufacture ofthe character described, shaped to fit the human head" and composed of sections of material,
ably fastening both ends together under the chin of the wearer.
'2. A head covering, covering to a hat or sections of material, three extended ends, two of Whi h are ni ed toge h r o rm reammg ban s engaging the back "and top of the head of the wearer; the other or free ends being padded and ,c" Vering parts of the head left exuseful as an auxiliary c n, c mp s o e each, section having posed. I
In testimony whereof we have hereunto aflixed our signatures. I I
