UMBRELLA-COVER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 31, 1918.
Application filed April 11, 1918. Serial No. 227,926.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM W. RUoKEn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Umbrella-Covers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an umbrella cover, and the primary object of the invention is to provide a cover for folded um brellas, which is composed of a strip of fabric wound spirally about a folded umbrella which will permit the easy and quick mounting of the cover upon or its removal from a folded umbrella, and further to pro vide an umbrella with which it will not be necessary to properly wind the umbrella before the cover can be applied thereto.
More specifically, the object of this inven tion is to provide an umbrella cover which is formed of a strip of fabric, having an angularly disposed extension formed upon one end of the same which extension is rolled to form a ferrule for gripping the ferrule of an umbrella and also to attach an elastic strip to the end of the cover oppositely to the end which carries the ferrule, and provides a suitable fastener one portion of which is carried by the free end of the elastic strip, and the other portion carried by the end of the fabric strip whereby the elastic strip may be wound about the protruding end of the stays of an umbrella and securely attached thereabout for maintaining the cover in a spirally wound position about an umbrella.
Other objects of the invention will appear in the following detailed description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in Which drawing:
Figure 1 is a view of a folded umbrella showing the cover wound thereupon.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary perspective view of the end of the cover which has the elastic strip attached thereto.
Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the ferrule of the cover.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary view of the tip end of the folded umbrella showing the ferrule end of the cover mounted thereon and in section.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary view of the blank of which the umbrella cover is formed.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, A designates an ordinary umbrella, including the fabric cover of body B, and the tip C, between which tip and the end of the fabric body B of the umbrella the ordinary type of ferrule D is mounted.
The cover for the folded umbrella, is generically indicated by the numeral 10, and it comprises a relatively narrow strip of fabric 11 which has an angularly disposed sub stantially rectangular extension 12' formed upon one end of the same. The extension 12 is rolled and fitted to the main body 11 of the strip of fabric as shown at 13 to provide a flexible ferrule 12. The edge 15 of the extension 12 projects beyond the lowermost edge or corner of the strip 11 and it is seated between a metal reinforcing ring 16 and a clamping shell 17 which shell is constructed of spring or resilient metal and securely grips the edge 15 which forms the lower end of the ferrule 14 for securely connecting the ferrule to the metal reinforcing ring 16.
The strip 11 of the fabric is [wound spirally about a folded umbrella as clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing, and it has a strip 18 of elastic stitched to its upper end as shown at 19. The edges of the strip of elastic converge, as they extend outwardly toward the free end of the strip. An ornamental tassel 20 may be attached to the free end of the strip 18 of elastic. An ordinary glove fastener is provided for attaching or fastening the upper end of the cover 10 about the folded umbrella and the socket member 21 thereof is carried by the strip 18 of elastic near the free end of the same while the inserting member 22 is carried by the fabric strip 11 near the point of connection between this fabric strip and the elastic strip 18 as clearly shown in Fig.2 of the drawing, so that when the cover 10 is spirally |wound about an umbrella the upper end, or namely the elastic strip 18 may be wound about the uppermost end of the body B of the umbrella and about the protruding ends of the ribs E of the umbrella. After the elastic strip has been properly wound about the top of the umbrella, the fastener structure comprising the socket member 21 and the inserting member 22 are connected, for securely holding the cover about the umbrella.
The spiral winding of the umbrella ,cover about the umbrella, will twist or properly fold the umbrella top, to provide a proper symmetrical appearing umbrella and will also eliminate the necessity of the previous twisting or folding of the umbrella top to insure the proper fitting of the cover.
WVhen it is desired to remove the cover 10 from the umbrella, the fastening device is loosened and the fabric strip is merely un wound from about the umbrella, and the ferrule 14 is slipped off the tip end of the umbrella in its proper state, without necessitating the turning of the cover inside out.
If it is so desired, the fabric strip 10 may be made of kh aki or any similar material of desired color to conform with the color of clothes 0r uniform Worn by the person carrying the umbrella I claim:
1. An umbrella cover comprising a strip of fabric adapted to be Wound spirally about a folded umbrella, an angularly disposed extension on said strip rolled and stitched to form a ferrule, and means upon the opposite end of the strip from said ferrule for attaching it about a folded umbrella.
2. An umbrella cover comprising a strip of fabric adapted to be Wound spirally about a folded umbrella, an angularly disposed extension on said strip rolled and stitched to form a ferrule, a rigid circular reinforc- Gopies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the ing ring attached to the lower end of said ferrule.
3. An umbrella cover comprising a strip of fabric adapted to be wound spirally about a folded umbrella, a flexible ferrule at one end of said strip, rigid circular reinforcing means for said ferrule, an elastic strip attached to the end of said fabric strip remote from said ferrule, the edges of said elastic strip converging as they extend toward the free end thereof, and fastening means carried by said elastic strip and said fabric strip for fastening the cover about an umbrella.
4. An umbrella cover comprising arstrip of fabric adapted to be wound spirally about a folded umbrella, an angularly disposed extension .on said strip rolled and stitched to form a ferrule, a metal reinforcing'ring positioned at the lower end of said ferrule, a clamping ring mounted about said reinforcing ring and a portion of said ferrule for securely attaching said reinforcing ring to said ferrule, and an elastic strip stitched to the end of saidfabric strip remote from said ferrule, and fastening means carried by said elastic strip and said fabric strip for fastening the cover about an umbrella.
