The objects of my invention are toV providel a substantial umbrella which can be so cheaply constructed as to be available for advertising purposes or for sale at very low prices, f and which will withstand a moderate amount ofrain. ,l

I attain these objects by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in

My umbrella comprises a handle, 1, in vtubular form and preferably .formed from a tube of pasteboard or. somefibrous material,

although any tubular` material of sufficient strength and lightness ma be used. The cover, 2, is prefera ly composed of a circular sheet of flexible, tough iaper which may be treated with water-proo ng material if desired. At'the center of the cover upon the upper face thereof, I re-enforce the cover by gluing thereto by water-proof glue( or otherwise suitably attaching thereto, a 'circular iece of cloth, 8, or other stron fibrous material, cutting same into sectors, 1 ,which may be pushed down into the upper, end of the tube, l, and secured therein bya plug, 9, which may be glued or otherwise suitably secured in the upper end ofthe tube, 1, andv *49 has a head which overlaps the upper end of the tube, 1. be similarly attachedto the under side of the cover with its inner edges 'extending 4 down into the upper end vof the tube, 1.

The plug, 9, and the re-enforcing strips,

If if is desired to use these umbrellas for advertising purposes, any suitable advertisement may be printed thereon and when desired to use them without advertising, they are preferably made of various attractive bri ht colors.

hese umbrellas can be constructedv at a price which will make them available to give away for advertising purposes and also may be available for sale at a low price at various ocean and lake beaches where some kind of a sunsbade is required. 'They also make an excellent protection from light rains for use in connection with convention parades and things of that kind where large numbers of peo le might desire to purchase a cheap umbrel a to be thrown away whenthey get through with it for that particular occasion.

I do not restrict my cover to paper, as cloth or other suitable brous material may be used and when the cover is strong enough, the central portion thereof may be cut into sectors and bent down and secured in the tube as described above without the re-enforcing strips,

I do not restrict my invention to the precise form of attaching the braces to the ribs and to the slide shown in the drawings, as same may be attached by securing the strips of fibrous material that formthe hinges to the ribs and braces by staples or other-means, or other forms of hinges such as hinges formed integral with wire staples ma be used to connect them, but I pre er the orm shown on account of its simplicity and the ease of attaching same.

The ribs are preferably formed to extend a little beyond the cover toprotect the cover, but when desired, they may be made a little shorter than the -cover and the edge of the cover frin ed or otherwise ornamented withoutdeparting from the spirit of my invention.

I claim:

1. In an umbrella, a hollow handleand a cover united thereto by a plug which wedges the central portion of the cover-into the upper end of the handle and secures sam therein.

2. In an umbrella, a hollow handle, a cover, a re-enforcing strip centrally attached to the cover having sectors at the center thereof turned downwardly and secured in the upper end of the handle.

3. In an umbrella, a hollow handle, acover, a re-enforcing strip centrally attached to the cover having sectors at the center thereof turned downwardly and secured in the upper end of the handle by a closely-fitting plug.

4. In an umbrella, a hollow handle, a cover, a re-enforcing strip centrally attached to the cover having sectors at the center thereof turned downwardly and secured in the upper end of the handle by a closely-fittingdplug glued within the upper end of the han 5. In an umbrella, a hollow handle, acover, a re-enforcing strip centrally attached to the cover having sectors at the center thereof turned downwardly and secured in the upper end of the handle by a closely-fitting lug secured in the upper end of the han e, said plug having an enlarged head.

6. In an umbrella, a hollow handle, a cover,

8. In an umbrella, t e combination with a hollow handle, of a plug fitted into the upper end thereof, a cover, a re-enforcin piece united to the cover at the center t ereof, with sectors of the cover and re-enforcing piece entered into the upy er end of the handle and secured therein by t e lug.

9. In an umbrella, a tubular pasteboard' handle, a cover, a re-enforcing strip centrally attached to the cover, and sectors of the cover and re-enforcing strip at the center thereof turned downwardly into and secured in the up er end of the handle.
