The cover is preferably made from a circular sheet of waterproof paper. Section ll] of framework 9 is positioned in its center and is affixed to cover 28 by a suitable adhesive. The chords onwhich cover portions 26a, 29b, 25c, and 2M are folded are also positioned outwardly from the outer ends of rib members l3, i4, i5, and iii to permit relative movement between the rib members and cover 20 for purposes to be more fully disclosed hereinafter. Each of cover portions 25a, 23b, 28c, and 28d is preferably stapled together by staples 35 on opposite sides of rib members l3, l4, l5, and

6 to form pockets similar to pocket 35! (Figure 4) in which the outer ends of the rib members are positioned.

Cover 2E3 is preferably folded on lines aligned with the edges of section if the two portions positioned outwardly from lines 3! and 32 (Figure 2) being folded inwardly first and then the other two portions 33 and 3 (Figure 1) are folded on top of the first-mentioned portions. When the folding portions of cover 26 are folded inwardly, the outer end of each of rib members 43, id, 55, and it moves outwardly toward the outer end of the pocket in which is positioned. This is permitted because of the depth of the pockets and is caused by the fact that the hinges are positioned on the underside of the rib members and the wing portions of section it]. Thus, the cover must fold ove both section it and the rib members, and the distance each rib member moves outwardly is determined by the length of these folds.

Thus, an umbrella has been disclosed which may be folded into a compact and neat package of a type which may be readily stocked in any newsstand or small store. When it is desired to use the umbrella, the user simply unfolds the four folding portions of the cover,

It will be'noted that the cover 20 isso constructed that it completely covers the framework of the umbrella and thus protects both the user and the umbrella itself from the rain.

It will thus be seen that a practical and emcient umbrella has been disclosed in which the several objects hereinabove mentioned, as well as many others, are successfully accomplished.

As many possible embodiments may be made of the above invention and as many changes might be made in the embodiments above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter hereinbefore set forth 'or shown in the accompanying drawing is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.

What is claimed is: V

1. In a device of the type described; in combination, a cover, a framework,- said framework including a substantially fiat relatively rigid center section and. four, wide, flat rib members connected to the edges of said center section, the width of said center section being at least half the width of said cover, said cover being foldable over said center section along the edges thereof to form a substantiall square flat package, means connecting said ribs to said cover,

means connecting said cover to said square center section, means to support said rib members in cover supporting position,- and a handle detachably connected to said center section.

2. In a device of the type described, in combination, a cover, a framework, said framework including a substantially square, flat, relatively rigid center section and a plurality of rib members, said center section being greater in width than the length of said rib members, said cover being connected to said center section, said rib .members being hingedly connected to'said cenincluding a substantially flat relatively rigid center section and a plurality of rib members, said cover being connected to said fiat center section, said rib members being hingedly connected to said center section, means forming pockets at the outer edges of said cover, the outer ends of said rib members being positioned in said pockets, a plurality of members slidably mounted on said rib members, said slidably mounted members being manually adjustable to ,block the action of the rib member hinges and hold the rib members in an extended position, and a handle detachably connected to said center section.

In a device of the type described, in combination, a cover made of waterproof paper, a framework, said framework including a substantially fiat relatively rigid center section made of cardboard and a plurality of cardboard rib members, said rib members being hingedly connected to said center section, means to support said rib members in an extended position, said cover and rib members being foldable over the center section of said framework, and a handle detachably connected to said center section.

In a device of the type described, in combination, a substantially circular cover made of waterproof paper, a framework, said framework including a substantially flat relatively rigid square center section made of cardboard and a plurality of rib members hingedly connected to said center section and also made of cardboard, said cover including portions folded inwardly to cover the outer ends of said rib members to form pockets within which the outer ends of said rib members are positioned, means to hold said rib members in extended position by blocking the action of said hinges, and a handle detachably connected to said center section.

6. In a device of the type described, in combination, a cover, a framework, said'framework including a substantially fiat, relatively rigid, square center section and four rib members, each rib member being substantially flat, of substantial breadth, and being hingedly connected to an edge of said center section, means forming tion, means to support said rib members in cover supporting position, means slidably connecting said rib members to said cover, and a handle detachably connected to said center section.

9. In a device of the type described, in combination, a cover substantially circular in shape, a framework, said framework including a fiat, relatively rigid center section, a plurality of flat, relatively rigid rib members, said center section being of greater width than the length of said rib members, said rib members being mounted on said center section and being adjustable to support the outer portions of said cover, means connecting said cover to said center section, said rib members lying in substantially the same plane as said cover when in cover-supporting position and in a plane substantially parallel to said center section when in folded position, means to support said rib members in cover supporting position, and a handle detachably connected to said center section, said ribs and cover being foldable over said center section along its edges to form a flat package having a width slightly greater than the width of said center section.
