Beit known that I, JOHN ROSE, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Umbrella Runners and Retainers, of which the following is a specification.

My invention has relation to a runner and retainer for umbrellas and parasols; and in such connection it relates particularly to the construction and arrangementof such runner and its retainer for an umbrella.

The principal object of my invention is to provide an umbrella-runner and its retainer of comparatively simple construction and which is durable and readily made and easily manipulated in connection lwith the stick of the umbrella.

The nature and scope of my invention will be more fully understood from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, in which- Figure l is a side elevational view of an umbrella runner and retainer embodying main features of my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the runner and retainer, and Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional View on the line :t :I: of Fig. 2.

Referring to the drawings, a represents the stick of an umbrella or parasol, in which is provided one or more holes or recesses a', adapted to be engaged by the point b of a retainer b, which is carried by the runner.

The runner consists of a tube d, having near one end an outwardly-bulged annular projection d', forming an external collar for the tube. Above the collar cl' and on the tube d is adapted to be slipped a sleeve e, having a box -shaped enlargement e formed on one side by pressing or stamping out the wall of the sleeve e at that point. The box-shaped enlargement e is slitted, as at e2, in its roof and is also cut away at one end, as at e3, to permit of the introduction and seating of the retainer b therein and which retainer is pivoted, as at b2, to the walls of the enlargement e' and has a spring b3, the free end of which' engages the unslitted portion of the roof of the box shaped enlargement to force the point inward toward the stick. The tube d is slit, as at d2, to correspond with the slit e2 in the box e' and to permit of the movement of the retainer and its point toward or away from the stick. A handle b4 on the retainer serves as a means to retract the retainer and its point against the tension of the spring b3, the oscillation of the retainer taking place within the box e of the sleeve e. The sleeve e is forced down on the tube d until one end rests against the collar d of the said tube, and the sleeve e is held to position on the tube by the notch-collarf, in which the ends of the spreaders are secured. The notch-collar f is slipped over the tube d and down upon the sleeve e and then secured vto the tube by solder or otherwise.

Having thus described the nature and object of my invention,what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In a combined runner and retainer for umbrellas and parasols, a tube, a collar formed by an annular'enlargement of the wall of the tube, a sleeve adapted to be slipped on the tube and resting against said collar, a notchcollar adapted to be secured on the tube to confine the sleeve to the tube, a box-shaped enlargement formed in the wall of the sleeve,

and slitted in its roof and out away at one end, a retainer adapted to be inserted in the enlargement of the sleeve and pivoted to the walls of said enlargement, a spring formed on the upper edge of the retainer and adapted to engage the unslit portion of the enlargement, and a handle extending from the retainer outside the enlargement and adapted when operated to oscillate the retainer within said enlargement, substantially as and for the purposes described.
