Description

tama, saar anatema.
Letters .Patent No. 95,080, dated September 21, 1869.
` The Schedule referred torin these 4Letters Patent; and making part of the same,
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it knows that I, s. B. BUSHFIELD, Jr., of Parkersburg, in the county of Wood, and State of West Virginia, have invented-.certain new and useful Improvements in Folding-Umbrellas; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had tothe accompanyingdrawings, and to theletters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
" The nature of `my` invention consists in the construction of an umbrellafwhich can be folded up into a very small compass, in order to make it more con-A venient for transportation.
The accompanying drawing represents a side elevation of my umbrella., part of the cover being re `moved so as to show "the action of the braces.
Letter -A represents thehandle, which is jointed at the `point c, so that it can Vbe'donbled'up like the handle of a parasol, into one half its length.
To a cap, M, near the top of the handle, are secured the ribs' B, upon which the cloth is stretched, and which are provided with enjoint near their middle, so
`that they can be folded out and upward so as to re? duce their length,4 1
These joints O :may either be the ordinary knucklejoint; or, in order to'give them greater strength, each one may be provided witha small hook or spring, e, attached to the upper part of the rib, .which catches in the lower part, and serves as a brace to it.
Moving up and down upon the handle,`is the double slotted runner D, to the top of which there are pivoted the stretchers G, by'means of which the ribs are extended or closed. The outer ends of the stretchers being hinged to the-ribs, by drawing the cylinderj i downward, the stretchers, from a vertical, are made to assume a horizontal position, causing the ribs to `spread outward. The handle is provided with two hooks or catches,
H and K, one being placed np above the middle joint, while the second is placed at they bottom. ,The upper catch H has its end bent so as to form ahook, which extendsoutward through the-slot in the side' of the cylinder. Around the top of this cylinder, there is a ring, c, passed, which catches in the top of this hook, and retains the cylinder in position.
When it is desired to pack the umbrella away in a trunk or carriage, it can be folded up to one half its length, `as described, and secured inthat position by means ofthe cord L, which is secured to the inside of the cloth, but which, when the umbrella is folded up, will come upon the outside. l'
For ordinary use,'the umbrella is used and managed like the .common ones, by simply drawing the cylinder D downward until the hook K catches in one of its slots and holds it there, the stretcher-s G preventing the handle from bending at the joint.
Upon the top of the handle there is placed a metal cap, M, to which the cloth and the ribs B are attached, and which has a circular opening, N, formed in its bottom, into which the top of the cylinder D, and the inner ends of the` stretchers G, fit, so as to further secure the foldingfef the umbrella? and to hold the stretcher more lirmly in place while it is folded.
This improvement is also designed to be applied to parasols.
Having thus described my invention, i What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let- -ters Patent, is-4 The combination and arrangement oi thehandle A, bisected ribs B B, braces G G, cylinder I), springs H K, and metal cap M, with its annular recess or opening N, all substantially as and for the purposes herein setforth.
In `testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand, this 5th day of July, 1869..
