Description

J.B.HOLMES' \wmmmmm CANDPIES FUR TENTS a BED-NETT|NHS Q PATENTED I J. BURT HOLMES, on CINCINNATI, OHIO.
Letters Patent No. 74,535, dated February 18, 1868.
IMPROVED CANOPY FOR TENTS AhlD BED-NETTINGS.
Ett re anaemia to in tlgttt new game an mating put of its same;
To ALL WHOM ITMAYOIONGERN:
Be it known that I, J'. BURT HOLMES, of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton, and'Statc of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Canopies for Tents and Bed-Nettingmgof which the following is a full and clear description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part ofthis specification.
My in vention relates to the construction and arrangement of certain mechanical devices in connection with the canopy, by means of which it maybe spread or opened, and closed whennot in use.
Figure 1 is a perspective ot my improvedcanopy, having a bed-netting attached thereto.
Figure 2 is a vertical central section of the same.
Figure 3 exhibits an elevation of the stretcher-support and an end View of the stretcher The canopy A is hell-shaped or conical, when spread, as shown in fig. 1. It is made'ot canvas or other suitable material. small opening, a, in the centre of the canopy, is occupied by'the pulley-holtb, which has the collar 6 located a short distance from the inner end, to whichis pivoted the roller or pulley B; The inner cap, C, is secured to the collarb. It is ,made of thin metal, and is bell-shaped. An outer cap, 0, similar in shape tothe cap, O, is pressed down upon the canopy'A hy suspension nut and eye D clamping it between the two caps, O C". A cord, pendent from the ceiling, is attached to the nut and eye D. The stretchersupport E isspherical, or'other desirable shape. It has the diametrically vertical opening 0, through which the operating or collapsing-cord cl passes. The collapsing-cord d is secured, at one end, to a ring'attached to the upper part ofthe stretcher-support. It passes over the pulley B, thence down through the stretcher-support E. The expanding-cord Gis securely attached to the stretcher-support, from which it is pendent. A series of arms, termed stretchers, H, (any convenient number may be us'ed,) are pivoted within the stretcher-support.
Their outer ends are perforated, e, through which is passed the split ring f, when the eyelet g, in the canopy, is placed upon the ends of the stretcher-s. Near the extreme end of each stretcher, H, are stops it, to prevent the canopy from collapsing when expanded by. the extension of the stretchers.
My improved canopy is designed for tent-tops, as well as :to be used by itself as a shield from the sun, and
is applicable as the upper .section of pendent 'bed-nettings. In order to spread the canvas or netting constituting the canopy proper,'the operator draws down the cord G,.depressing the stretcher-support, and expanding the stretchers H, when the canopy is spread out to its full extent, as exhibited in fig. 1 of the drawings. In order that the cord 11 shall.not pass up through the centre of the'stretcher-support, a stop is secured to it, of a 'size toolarge'to enter the central opening in the stretcher-support. When it is'desirahleto remove or pack for transportation the canopy, the collapsing-cord d is drawn down, thus elevating the stretcher-support to near the apex of the canopy, whenthe stretchers H fold together, and the eanopymay be laid aside, or transported as readily as a closed umbrella.
The advantages at my improved canopy over those new in use are, its adaptation to the purposes herein set forth,'and the simplicity of construction and operation of its various parts, whereby it is easily adjusted to or removed fromits place. I i
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. The canopy A, in combination with stretchers H stretcher-support E, when the same are constructed and operate substantially in the manner as and for the purpose herein set forth and described.
2. The cups, 0 C, pulley-bolt b, and nut andeye D, when arranged substantially as specified, and for the purpose set forth. p p
3. The stretch'er-support E'and stretchers H, constructed as herein shown and specified, and for the purpose set forth. I
J. B. HOLMES. Witnesses:
O. L. Frsnnn, SAMUEL R. Rosanna.
