T0 ALLWHOM IT MAY CONGERN:
Be it known that I, ISAAC E. PALMER, of Hackcnsaclgin the'connty of Bergen, and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in llosquitoanopies; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a portion of this specification, invwhich- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a mosquito-canopy constructed according to my invention.
Figure 2 is a vertical transverse section of a portion of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
The object of this invention is to dispense .with the necessity of placing the hand within the canopy in expanding or spreading the same, and thereby to facilitatetliel manipulation of the canopy in adjusting the same for use. The invention consists in an operating-cord and a holding-stem furnished with a spring-catch, so arranged as to work through the tubular socket to which are attached the radial ribs of' the canopy, by which means the desired result is effectually secured. i
To enable others to understand the construction and operation ot' my invention, I will proceed to describe it with reference to the drawings.
A shows the tubular socket, to which are pivoted the inner ends of the radial ribs B. Indicated at C is a holding-stem, the upper end of which worksy through the socket just mentioned, as shown in yg. 2,` and hereinafter explained. This stem C has pivoted to its' lower extremity the radial braces D, the outer ends of which are pivoted to the ribs B, as represented in b oth the figures. The holding-stem G is furnished with aspringcatch, a, fitted into a recess formed longitudinally in oneside thereof, and which, when the ribs B are spread out or erpandod, ts through a slot, a', provided in the adjacent side of' the socket, and serves to hold the afore- Said ribs in their expanded condition. Attached to the upperextremity of the holding-stem is an operating cord, E; by means of which the holding-stein is drawn upward to spread apart or expand the ribs. The net orl reticulated material F may be of any appropriate kind, and is placed over or upon the. aforesaid. ribs-in any ordinary or suitable manner.
When the ribs are held in an expanded condition by means of the holding-stern and its spring'cateh a, as hereinbefore set for-th,- the net F will be held spread out and supported in the manner required for use, and when it is desired to fold the apparatus into a small compass, it is only necessary to force inward the spring- 1 catch a from its held in the slot in' the side ofthe socket A, thus releasingthe ribs B, which are then brought into a position nearly .or quite parallel with each other, whereupon ,the net may be wrapped closely around them.' When the ribs are thus closed or brought together-,the holdingstern C willbe forced downward ont of the socket, thus drawing the operating-cord E with it, the said cord being, however, prevented from passing wholly through the socket by means of a knob, l, secured to the end thereof, so that, in order to again expand the canopy, it is only required to draw upward the said cord,`wl1ich, by forcing upward the holding-stem, spreads the ribs until the spring-catch av of' the sainpsteni, catching through the slot in the side of the soekct,' holds the ribs in position, ashereinbefore explained, any necessity 'of passing the hand within the net to expand or adjust thc canopy, as required in these of ordinary construction, being, by this means, effectually avoided.-
What I claim ns: my invention, and desire l'o secure by Letters Patent, is
The operating-mrd and holding-stein, secured to the braces Dtand arranged towork through the tubular socket et' the ribs l., whereby the canopy may be expanded from the exterior' thereof, substantially as herein shown and described. i
ISAAC E. PALMER.
