6 Claims. (Cl. 13533) This invention relates to a combination umbrella and pocket bag construction.

it is an object of the present invention to provide a combined ladys umbrella and pocket bag construction wherein the pocket bag will be supported from the handle of the umbrella at times when the two are being carried together and wherein a separate handle is provided for the pocket bag so that the same can be carried independently of the umbrella; and wherein the handle for the bag is extended through the handle of the umbrella to maintain the bag in a lifted position upon the umbrella and wherein the coupled parts of the umbrella and of the bag serve to hold the ends of the umbrella closed upon one another; and wherein the bag is detached from the coupling part on the umbrella by merely unthreading the attaching portion of the bag from the coupling part of the umbrella and by releasing the handle strap thereof.

Other objects of the present invention are to provide a combined umbrella and pocket bag construction which is simple, inexpensive to manufacture, has a minimum number of parts, easy to effect the coupling of the umbrella with the pocket bag and also the release of the pocket bag from the umbrella, of pleasing appearance and efiicient in use.

For other objects and for a better understanding of the invention, reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the pocket bag assembled upon the umbrella and embodying the features of the present invention.

Referring now to the figures, 10 represents an umbrella part and 11 represents a pocket bag part adapted to slide upwardly over the umbrella and attach with handle 12 thereof to the pocket bag strap handle 13 so that the two may be jointly carried together. The pocket bag strap 13 extends through the opening in the umbrella handle 12 and is releasably connected at its end to a pocket bag coupling ring 14 that is internally threaded and preferably formed of plastic to have a pleasing appearance.

A staple 15 is fixed to one side of the ring 14 and strap 13 is connected by its loop end 16 therewith. At the opposite side of the ring 14 is a staple 17 for receiving hook 18 connected to the other end of'the strap 13. On

the umbrella is an externally threaded member 19 which is slidable upon umbrella shaft 21 and which has a bottom recess 22. This member 19 can be adjusted on the umbrella shaft 21 to encompass the ends 23 of umbrella wires which support the covering 24. To effect the coupling of the pocket bag part with the umbrella, the ring 14 is threaded upon the externally threaded member 19 on the umbrella.

A slightly tapered sleeve of fabric material, as indicated at 25, has its upper end embedded in the bottom of ring 14. The lower end of the fabric sleeve is embedded in k a bottom fitting part 26 adapted to receive the end 27 of the umbrella. The length of the sleeve is equal to the length of the umbrella supporting wires so that the covering and the supporting wires will be enclosed within the tapered sleeve 25.

Surrounding the tapered sleeve is the pocket bag outer casing 28 that is folded inwardly longitudinally of the same and connected at circumferentially spaced locations by stitchings 31 to the central sleeve 25 whereby to provide a plurality of circumferentially spaced pockets 32 having bottoms 33 in which parcels and other articles can be placed. About the top edge of each pocket there is fitted a cover 34 which is secured by stitching 35 and which has a slide fastener arrangement 36 with'a slide 37 for operating the same. The lower end of the outer casing 28 of the pocket bag is connected by stitching 38 to the inner sleeve 25.

It will be seen that the umbrella can be readily .detached or removed from the pocket bag part 11 at times when needed and the pocket bag part will have its own handle strap 13 whereby it can be carried independently of the umbrella. The coupling part 19 will remain on the umbrella and when lifted the wire supports of the umbrella can be expanded.

By the operation of the slide fastener devices, access can be had to the pocket bag compartments 32. To again attach the pocket bag part, the internally threaded ring 14 will be threaded upon the member 19.

Referring now to Figs. 6 to 11, 41 represents a pocket bag constructed similarly to the pocket bag 11 except for the top part thereof and the manner by which it is secured to the umbrella handle. According to this form of the invention, the pocket bag has a central sleeve 42 that extends upwardly above the top parts 43 and has a ring structure formed of split parts 45 and 46 hinged together by a pivot pin 47 and having latch enlargements 48 and 49 respectively. A snap ring 51 extends about the upper end of sleeve 42 and with the aid of screw elements 52 passing therethrough and into the split parts 45 and 46, the upper end of the sleeve is retained. These split rings are provided with rubber inserts 53 which will engage the handle 54 of an umbrella 55' disposed in the sleeve 42 in such a manner as to be frictionally held against displacement thereon. The upper end of the sleeve 42 is gathered for securernent with the split ring structure and is slit, as indicated at 55, so as to provide sufiicient opening for the removal of the umbrella.

Each of the split ring parts 45 and 46 have a trunnionlike element 56 extending outwardly therefrom over which a grommet 57 in the end of a handle strap 58 is fixed, Fig. 11.

By a simple twisting of the retaining balls 48 and 49 the split rings can be released for the purpose of inserting the umbrella 55' into the sleeve 42 or for the purpose of removing the same. With the pocket bag 41 removed, the same can be supported by the strap 58. With the umbrella handle in place and the split parts 45 and 46 secured about the handle, the bag and the umbrella can be carried by the umbrella handle or, if desired, the strap 58 can be threaded through the umbrella handle 54 and both the umbrella and bag carried by the strap 58.

The pocket bag has pockets 59 circumferentially spaced about the sleeve 42 with the bottoms 60. A slide fastener arrangement 61 is disposed along the side of the pocket and over the top 43 thereof The lower end of the covering of the pocket bag is made secure to bottom parts 62 and 63. The part 63 is in the form of a ring which fits about the covering material to grip the covering with the lower end of the sleeve 42 upon a flange 64 of the part 62. The part 62 has an opening therein into which the lower end of the umbrella is inserted when in the central sleeve 42.

It will now be apparent that with this form of the invention an upper ring can be removed from the handle 54.

While various changes may be made in the detail construction, it shall be understood that such changes shall be within the spirit and scope of the present invention as defined by the appended claims.

What is claimed is:

l. A combined umbrella and pocket bag construction comprising an umbrella part having a central shaft and an apertured handle, a pocket bag part having a central tubular, umbrella-receiving sleeve into which the umbrella part is insertable and from which it is removable and a plurality of circumferentially spaced, radially arranged external pockets of generally conical shape secured to said central sleeve and provided at their upper ends with openable closures, means for detachably coupling the upper portion of the central sleeve of the pocket bag part to the shaft of the umbrella part and means connected to said first means and extending through said handle for detachably coupling the pocket bag part and the umbrella part. i

A combined umbrella and pocket bag construction in accordance with claim 1 in which the means for detachably coupling the central sleeve of the pocket bag part to the shaft of the umbrella part includes an externally threaded member mounted on said umbrella shaft and an internally threaded ring adapted for connection with the externally threaded member on the umbrella shaft, the sleeve of said pocket bag part being secured to said ring. 3. A combined umbrella and pocket bag construction in accordance with claim 1 in which the pocket bag part has the general shape and appearance of an unopened umbrella and tapers from top to bottom. i

4. A combined umbrella and pocket bag construction in accordance with claim 1 in which the external pockets are defined by longitudinal stitching disposed therebetween and extending into the central sleeve.

5. A combined umbrella and pocket bag construction comprising an umbrella part having a central shaft, a pocket bag part having a central tubular, umbrella-receiving sleeve into which the umbrella part is insertable and from which it is removable and a plurality of circumferentially spaced, radially arranged external pockets of generally conical shape secured to said central sleeve and provided at their upper ends with openable closures, and means for detachably coupling the pocket bag part to the shaft of the umbrella part, each pocket being provided with a transverse member intermediate its top and bottom to constitute a support for an article placed there in and each such transverse member being secured to its pocket and to the central sleeve.

A pocket bag construction comprising a central, tubular fabric sleeve, a fabric casing disposed around said sleeve in spaced relation thereto, spaced rows of vertical stitching securing said casing to said sleeve to form pockets, openable closure means for the upper ends of said pockets and a transverse member forming a bottom for each pocket and stitched to said casing and said sleeve, the tubular sleeve being unobstructed and dimensioned to receive an unopened umbrella, and carrying means secured to theupper portion of said sleeve.
