Abstract

1290316 Automatic-opening umbrellas IDEAL SHOJI K K 26 June 1970 [30 June 1969, 7 July 1969, 8 July 1969, 19 July 1969] 31222/70 Heading A4P GENERAL CONSTRUCTION, Fig. 1. An umbrella has a telescopic stick with a handle 5 at the base of the inner section 4, biasing means 6, 7 urging the stick into its extended state and first locking means including members 12, 13 to so maintain it and releasable by urging the stick towards its closed state; a plurality of main ribs 16 each pivoted to a crown 2 and carrying a sliding git 20 which is pivotally connected at 22 to an outer rib 17; struts 18 carried by a main slider 24 each pivoted to the git at 23; a plurality of auxiliary struts 19 carried by an auxiliary slider 28, and pivoted at 27 to the struts 18; second biasing means 32 urging the sliders apart and second locking means 33 to retain the umbrella in a collapsed state. STICK The stick is made in three telescopic sections 1, 3 and 4 urged apart by springs 6 and 7, spring 6 preferably having a higher biasing force than spring 7. Locking members 12 and 13 of the first locking means pass through holes 14 and 15 in the stick sections and are supported by leaf springs 12<SP>1</SP> and 13<SP>1</SP>. The springs 6 and 7 abut plugs 10 and 11 at their bases and are secured to stops 8 and 9 at their tops. The crown 2 is threaded to receive the ferrule (not shown) which holds the centre of the canopy in place. Telescoping of the stick is facilitated by longitudinal ribs in the walls of the stick sections which interengage. SLIDERS The main and auxiliary sliders 24 and 28 are urged apart by a spring 32 which effects self opening of the umbrella. The spring 32 enters a hollow cylindrical portion 29 of the auxiliary slider 28. Openings 31 and 31<SP>1</SP> are provided in the auxiliary slider for engagement with the locking means 33. HANDLE AND LOCKING MEANS, Fig.9. The handle 5 is secured to the base of the stick by a screw 38. The locking means 33 has a pawl 34 which engages the opening 31<SP>1</SP> in the auxiliary slider 28 when the umbrella is folded, the tips of the ribs are then gathered together and the handle 5 is pushed upwards against a spring 43 to engage a mouth portion 5<SP>1</SP>, which forms a tip cup, with the rib tips, in which position it is retained by the pawl 34 engaging the opening 31 in the auxiliary slider 28. The spring 43 is retained by an auxiliary tubular member 41 which abuts the auxiliary slider 28 and is retained at the base of the stick by a locking member 39 which engages an opening 44. GITS, Fig. 8. Each git 20 is slidable along a U-section main rib 16 and draws with it the outer rib 17 which is pivotally connected to it at 22 by a pin 22a and is guided by a stop ring 21. Each strut 18 is pivotally connected to a git at 23 by a pin 23a. The gits themselves are of U-shaped crosssection with tabs 20a and 20b which are folded over the main rib member 16 to locate the git thereon.
