United States Patent Ofiice Patented Dec. 4, 1956 TELESCOPIC POCKET UMBRELLA Benno Leo Koch, Geneva, Switzerland Application September 22, 1953, Serial No. 381,546 Claims priority, application Switzerland October 25, 1952 1 Claim. (Cl. 135-26) The invention relates to a telescopic pocket umbrella in which the frame consists of hingedly interconnected rods which are composed of tubular rod sections of stepped diameters which are adapted to be moved telescopically one within the other and which are held by stop means in the extended position, a central telescopic rod serving as support for the umbrella and a star-shaped rosette at the upper end serving for the connection with the rods carrying the cover, while the central rod has arranged thereon a displaceable sleeve with which the rods are pivotally connected and the free end of the central rod has fixed thereon a flange with upright rim, which flange permits the simultaneous pulling out of the lateral supporting rods, engages the ends of the rods when the umbrella is in the closed position and secures the rods.
These and other objects of the invention will become further apparent from the following detailed description, reference being made to the accompanying drawing showing a preferred embodiment of the invention.

Figure 2 shows the pocket umbrella partly in the open position; and
Figures 3 and 4 show details to a larger scale.
The umbrella comprises a central collapsible supporting rod 1 which consists of telescopically interengaging tubular rod sections 3, 3a, 3b, 3c, etc., which decrease in diameter and which comprise at one end a head 4 (Figure 4) connected fast with the rod section and having a recessed rimS, said rod sections being provided adjacent the end opposite head 4 with spring tongues 7 which are formed by an H-shaped slot including longitudinal slots 6 and a transverse slot 8 and which serve to stop the tubular members 3 to 3c in the extended or open position, said tongues permitting the tubular members to be guided without play one within the other. Each rim engages in the slot 8 of a corresponding one of the springs 7, thereby preventing the tubular sections from being pulled out too far and securing the said tubular sections in the open position. Connected to the free end of the central rod 1 by a screw 12 is a flange 11 having an inwardly projecting rim 13 which grips and holds together the heads 9 of the lowermost, cover-supporting sections 17c of the outer rods 17, 17a, 17b, 170 etc. on one side and effects the simultaneous extension of the outer supporting rods 17 to 17c upon opening the umbrella. Connected to the opposite end of the central carrier rod 1 of the umbrella is a rosette 14 which has radial cut-outs 15 for the insertion of the ends of the supporting rods. These tubular sections 17, into which the sections 17a to 170 are telescopically displaceable and all of which have bayonet joints at their ends, telescope with rod sections 20 carrying at the ends facing the rosette hooks 18 engageable with a ring 19 provided in the rosette. Arranged on each tubular section 20 is a lug 21 to which a respective rod member 22 is hingedly connected at one end. The other end of each rod member 22 is hingedly mounted in notches at the upper end of the sleeve 2. The sleeve 2 is guided for sliding movement on the rod 1 and is made conical at the bottom end. The tubular elements 17 are held for radial displacement in the upper tubular elements 20 of the outer rods, said elements 17 being tensioned by the tension of the cover 27 against the rosette. A rosette 24 fitted on the end of the central rod 1 carries a groove 25 which permits the umbrella to be held while it is being opened and closed. Fitted on the rosette 14 is a covering rosette 26, the cover 27 being clamped between the latter and the rosette 24, while the outer edge of the cover is fixed on holding parts 29 projecting from the rod sections 17c. A handle of any desired type for holding the umbrella may be arranged on the flange 11.
Various changes and modifications may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the present invention and it is intended that such obvious changes and modifications be embraced by the annexed claim.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is:
A telescopic pocket umbrella comprising a central rod having upper and lower ends, a rosette on the upper end of said central rod, said rosette being provided with a plurality of receses, a plurality of supporting rods having upper and lower ends, the upper ends of said supporting rods being hook-shaped and seating in said recesses of said rosette, respectively, ring means hingedly connecting said hook-shaped ends of said supporting rods to said rosette for pivotal movement of said supporting rods with respect to said central rod, said central rod and said supporting rods including a plurality of tubular rod sections of stepped diameters telescopically displaceable within each other, respectively, each of said rod sections including stop means for maintaining said rods in extended position, said stop means comprising a conical head including a projecting edge at one end of each of said rod sections, respectively, and two oppositely directed inwardly bent tongues at the other end of each of said rod sections, respectively, said tongues defining a slot therebetween, said head of each of said rod sections extending into the adjacent rod section for cooperation with the slot of said adjacent rod section, sleeve means on one of the rod sections of said central rod, said sleeve means being displaceable upwardly along said one rod section in moving from closed to open position of said umbrella, a plurality of rod members hingedly connecting said sleeve means with said supporting rods, respectively, and flange means provided with an upright rim and carried on said lower end of said central rod, the lower ends of said supporting rods, respectively, being secured in said rim of said flange means in closed position of said umbrella, whereby upon telescopically extending said central rod said supporting rods are simultaneously extended, upward movement of said sleeve means then effecting pivotal displacement of said supporting rods to open said umbrella.
