COLLAPSIBLE OR FOLDING HAT SUPPORT Fi led Nov. 10, 1928 Patented Feb. 11, 1930 warren STATES PATENT OFFICE .rosnrn w. MARTIN, on NEW YORK,

COLLAPSIBLE bR FOLDING HAT SUPPORT Application filed November 10, 1928. Serial No. 318,503.
This invention relates to improvements in collapsible or folding hat supports of the More specifically my invention relates to an extensible, collapsible hat support or stand for individual or display purposes and embodying aplurality of telescopic members loosely connected to a base and a crown or head and slidable relative thereto whereby the entire structure may be folded in a substantially flat condition. i
To enable others skilled in the art to more fully comprehend the underlying features of my invention and its application for the uses and purposes intended, reference is had to the accompanying drawing showing a pre ferred embodiment thereof in which Fig. 1 is a vertical, sectional view embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a view showing the invention in its folded or collapsed condition.
Fig. 5 is a sectional view showing the interior of the device when in its folded condition.
Fig. 6 is a detail view showing the connection between an end telescopic member and the base or head of the device.
7 is a sectional view showing means for locking the telescopic members.
Referring now to the drawings wherein like reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 5 designates a flat base which may be square or rectangular in shape and preferably of light metal of suflicient area to support an extensible structure further to be described.
The base 5 has permanently attached thereto a substantially U-shaped guide plate 6 which may be welded or riveted thereto, said plate having a central slot or recess 7 and open at one end 8 in proximity to one sideedge of the base. The inner sides 9 of the guide plate are slightly raised from the surface of the base to slidingly receive the lateral lugs or pins 10, 11 on the bottom of a hollow member 12 which maybe square shaped or circular in cross section. The outer end of the guide plate is provided with upwardly bent portions 18 to receive the lugs or pins to form .a pivotal support therefor whereby the hollow member may be folded over onthe base from one edge thereof when the device is in its collapsed condition. a In other words, the height of the member 12 is somewhat less than the diameter of the base and the width of the member 12 is substantially the width of the slot or recess 7.
The member 12 being confined in the slotted plate, when in its upright position, as shown by Fig. 1 is disposed centrally of the base.
Telescopically connected to the member 12 are a plurality of hollow members 14, 15, 16 each interfitting with one another. The upper end of the hollow members are bent inwardly as at 15 and the lower ends are bent outwardly as at 16- and-between each of the continuous members 12, 1 1, 15, I provide a snap spring 17 attached thereto, each of said springs having a loop 18 adapted to engage a recess or opening 19 in its locked position as shown by Fig. 7.
The'top member 16 is also adapted to slide in a guide plate 17 which is attached to the bottom of circular concave crown or head 18 having an annular flange 19 The plate 17 extends in the opposite direction from the guide plate on the base so that when the telescopic members are collapsed, the crown or head may constitute a closure to conceal the interior of the device, as shown more clearly by Fig. 4c of the drawing.
The guide plate 17 is also U-shaped and the central slot 19 extends in proximity to the outer edge of the head or crown. The top member 16 is also equipped with lateral lugs or pins 20 which are adapted to slide in the inner sides 21 of the guide plate, the outer ends of said plate having a downwardly bent ortion 22 which forms a hinged connection or the said top member permitting it to fold over and in the opposite direction as the lowermost member 16. The guide plate 17 is also of a length so that when the telescopic members are expanded, the extreme top member is disposed centrally of the crown or head thus producing an upright structure capable of supporting an object, such as a hat body or other article, or wearing apparel. In actual practice, the telescopic members frictionally slide within each other so that if desired, the height of the device may be regulated or adjusted for a specific or particular use. Consequently, the support or stand is capable of use as a window or show case dis play stand to exhibit shoes or other merchandise in which instance, the folding or collapsible convenience does not become important. However, as anindividual item, it will be readily seen that by reason of the collapsible nature of the support, it may be folded and packed in a comparatively very small space in a traveling bag, for instance, and when needed, may be opened to accommodate the article for the uses and purposes intended.
While I have shown and described my invention with somedegree of particularity, it will be realized that other modifications and thanges may be resorted to under special conditions. I therefore do not Wish to be limited and restricted to the exact details shown and described but reserve the right to make such changes and modifications as may fairly fall within the scope of the subject matter now being claimed.
Having shown and described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A support of the class described comprising a base, a crown, a plurality of telescopic members connecting the base and crown, slotted guide plates attached to the base and crown respectively, the bottom and top members having lugs and slidable within the slotted guide plates toward the outer edges of the base and crown respectively, said plates having means at their outer ends whereby said lugs may pivot therein and fold over in a flat position between the base and crown when the support is collapsed.
2. Asupport of the class described comprising a base, a crown, a plurality of telescopic members connecting the base and crown, U- shaped guide plates attached to the base and crown respectively and adapted to receive the bottom and top telescopic members, said guide plates having means at their outer ends cooperating with the respective top and bottom members whereby the latter may be folded and concealed between the base and crown.
3. A support of the class described comprising a base, a crown, a U-shaped guide plate attached to the base and crown respectively and a plurality of telescopic members attached to the guide plates, said members being expansible in one position and adapted to be folded in a concealed position between the base and crown in a second position.
4. A support of the class described comprising a base, a crown, U-shaped slotted guide plates attached to the base and crown respectively and a plurality of telescopic members connected to and slidable relative to said guide plates whereby said members may be folded in a concealed position between the base and crown when the support is collapsed.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
