The folding chair, according to this invention, comprises a bracket l0 mounted on the top end. of a foot I I; and having several slots I! each extending inwards from the bottom and outer side of the bracket I0. Arms I3 are pivotally mounted: at one of their ends l3 in the. slots l2 and are adapted to extend downwards parallel to the foot I l and upwards and outwards as limited by. engagement with thetopwalls of the slot l2. A- seat l4 issecuredon the outer end I3 of one of the arms l3 and releasably engages the outer ends l3 of the other arms I3.

The bracket l0 consists of a piece of material having three finger portions ll) spaced 120 from each other. It is these finger portions Ill which are provided with the slots l2: Which extend inwards from the bottom and outer sides thereof. The ends l3 'of the arms I3extend within the slots [2 and pintle pins 15 extend through openings in the finger portions Ill and the ends l3 for. pivotally mounting the arms l3 on the bracket Ill so that these arms may be pivoted to an inoperative position parallel to the foot H, or to an operative position as limited by the top wall of the slots [2;

The foot II consists of sections Il -and ll which telescopically engage each other. The top end of the outer section ll engages into the bracket I O from the underside. The section H has its top end engaging into the bottom end of the outer section H and is provided at its bottom end with a ground peg 16. This ground peg consists of a plate portion l6 and a toe portion Ili The top face of the plate portion is formed with a shank portion l6 which is adapted to extend into the bottom of the inner section ll of the foot ll. This shank has out- Wardly extending pegs I 6 which engage into bayonet slots II formed in the inner section ll for holding the ground peg I6 in position upon the foot II. It is the toe portion Hi which engages the ground upon. which the seat is resting for preventing. the chair from sliding beneath the person sitting thereon. The plate portion l6 is adapted: to abut the top surface of the ground upon which the stool is resting for preventing the Weight of the person from forcing the inner section ll of the: foot II into the ground.

A means is provided for holding thesections H and M in their various extended positions. This means ccmprisesa ring H: which engages around the bottom end of the outer section I I and which carries a chain I8 upon the end of which a peg I9 is mounted. This peg is adapted to be extended through aligned openings 20 in the inner section I I for holding the sections in their extended position. As shown in Fig. 1 the peg I9 may be so positioned within the openings 20 to hold the sections in the position illustrated by the dot and dash lines II. If the person sitting on the chair finds that the chair is too low he may withdraw the section II from the section II after having withdrawn the peg I9 from the opening 20 and extended the section II to the position illustrated by the full lines II or the dot and dash line II". He may then re-engage the peg I9 with the proper opening 20 to hold the sections I I and I I in a fixed position.

The seat I4 comprises a piece of leather or other similar material of a substantially triangular shape. One of the corners of the seat I4 is provided with a ring element 2I which has its ends 2H engaging through an opening I4 in the seat corner. This corner is then bent over and held in position by stitches 22 for holding the ring 2! in position thereon. This ring 2I engages the loop portion I3 of one of the arms I3 for fixedly holding the seat to this arm in all of the positions of the chair. The other two corners of the chair I4 are provided with hook elements 23 which have their ends 23 engaging through openings I 4 in the other corners of the seat portion I4, these corners are also bent over and held in position by stitches 22. These hooked portions are adapted to engage slots 24 formed in the other arms I3 for holding the seat portion I4 in a substantially horizontal plane in the assembled position of the device.

The device, as shown in Figs. 1-3 is in its assembled position, while in Fig. 6 the device is shown in its closed position. To close the chair,

as shown in Fig. 6, the peg I9 is withdrawn from the opening 20 and the inner section I I is pushed to a position in which it is entirely contained within the outer section I l The hook elements 23 are then disengaged from the slots 24 to permit the arms I3 to be moved to a position in which they are in a parallel position alongside the foot structure I I. When the arms I3 have been moved to their closed position the seat portion I4 will extend beyond the end thereof as shown by the full lines in Fig. 6. This seat I4 is moved to the dot and dash position I4 shown in Fig. 6 and the ends thereof are wrapped around the foot I I and the arms I3 to the position illustrated by the dot and dash lines I4" in Fig. 6. Thus it will be seen that the chair in its closed position occupies a minimum of space and at the same time forms a strong seat structure which is capable of supporting considerable weight without the collapsing of any of the parts.

According to the modification shown in Figs. 8- 10 the ground peg 25 consists of a shank portion 25 which continues into a plate portion 25 and a suction cup 25 which is adapted to engage a substantially hard and flat surface for preventing the folding chair from slipping under the weight of a person resting thereon. The sides of the inner section I I are formed with aligned bayonet slots 26 into which pegs 21 projecting from the opposite'sides of the shank portion 25 are adapted to engage in order to hold the ground peg 25 in position on the inner section I I This plate portion 25 as shown in this form of the invention merely acts as a flange which is adapted to abut the bottom end of the inner section II In other respects this form of the invention is similar to the previous form and similar parts may be recognized by the corresponding reference numerals.

According to the modification shown in Figs. 11 and 12 the bracket I0 is provided with blocks II] which are resiliently mounted in the slots I2 formed therein in order to permit the seat portion I4 to be easily engaged on the arms I3. A spring 28 is held in position upon the body of the bracket I0 within each slot I2 by means of a rivet or similar holding element 29. The outer end of the spring 28 carries a block I!) which is held in position thereon by means of a screw or similar holding element 30. Each block Ill extends into a portion I2 of the slot I2 and is adapted to resiliently limit the upward and outward pivoting of each of the arms I3. In this form of the invention when it is desired to engage the hook elements 23 into the slots 24 formed in 9.1

the ends I3 of the arms I3 it is merely necessary to pivot the arms I3 to their upward and outward position against the holding action of the springs 28 to a position in which the hook elements 23 will easily engage the slots 24. When these arms I3 are again released the springs 28 will force the arms I3 back to a position in which they will resiliently hold the seat element I4 in a substan tially horizontal position. In other respects this form is similar to the previous form of the invention and similar parts may be identified by corresponding reference numerals.

While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:

1. In a folding chair a foot for engaging the ground and for supporting a bracket which has arms pivotally mounted thereon to support a seat, a

said foot comprising telescopic tubes adjustably engaging each other and means for holding said telescopic tubes in their extended positions, said means comprising a ring on the bottom end of one of said telescopic sections, a chain extending from said ring, and a pin on the end of said chain adapted to extend through aligned openings of a series of openings formed in the other of said sections and on which said first section rests, the lower of said sections being provided :5.

with a ground 'peg with wedge shaped prongs for preventing said chair from slipping, said ground peg comprising a shank portion having pegs extending from the sides thereof and engaging bayonet slots in one of said telescopic sections for releasably holding said ground peg in position thereon, said shank portion continuing into a horizontal plate portion abutting the bottom edge of said telescopic section and said plate portion continuing into a vertical toe portion comprising wedge shaped prongswhich are adapted to engage into said ground for preventing said chair from slipping.

2. In a folding chair a bracket having several slots each extending inwards from the outer sides and arms pivotally mounted at one of their ends in the bottom of said slots and adapted to extend downwards and upwards and outwards as limited by engagement with resiliently supported blocks mounted in the tops of said slots for supporting a seat secured on the outer end of one of said arms and releasable on the outer ends of said other arms.

3. In a folding chair a bracket having several slots each extending inwards from the outer sides, and arms pivotally mounted at one of their ends in the bottom of said slots and adapted to extend downwards and upwards and outwards as limited by engagement with resiliently supported blocks mounted in the tops of said slots for supporting a seat secured on the outer end of one of said arms and releasable on the outer ends of said other arms, said resiliently supported blocks comprising leaf springs having one of their ends fixedly attached to the body portion of said bracket and blocks fixedly mounted on the other end of said springs and extending upwards into enlarged portions of said slots and being adapted to engage the top sides of said arms for forcing said arms into a position in which they maintain said seat in a substantially horizontal position.
