SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 581,486, dated April 27, 1897.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALEXANDER MoNKIE- WIOZ, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at East Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stools, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in folding stools, and has for its object to construct a stool that can be easily and quickly folded in a neat and compact form for carrying.

The invention has for its further object to construct a stool of the above-referred-to class that will be particularly useful and convenient as a camp-stool or for house purposes and that can be adjusted to different heights, making a firm and rigid seat at each height and that will present an extremely handsome appearance whether in the folded or unfolded position.

A still further object of my invention is to provide a folding stool that will be extremely simple in its construction, strong, durable, effectual in its operation, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.

With the above and other objects in view the invention finally consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more specifically described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and wherein like letters of reference indicate similar parts throughout the several views, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the, stool in the extended position ready for use. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the stool in a partly-extended position which may be used, if desired. Fig. 3 is a side view of the stool when folded. Fig. 4 is an underneath plan view of the stool when folded. Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail view of one of the upright folding braces. Fig. 6 is a sectional view showing the manner in which the braces are hinged to the supporting-band. Fig. 7 is a longitudinal sectional view of the stool extended. Fig. 8 is a sectional view thereof when collapsed.

In the drawings, a represents the top band, to which is secured the material forming the seat I).

c is the lower band, supporting the braces, and d the center band for the same.

To the inner face of the band a, preferably near the upper edge of the same, are hinged upright braces e e e e, hinged at their lower ends to the band (1, said braces also being hinged at or near their center, as shown at f f. To retain the braces e e in their eX- tended position, I have provided on the inner face of the lower portion of the braces e e a spring g, curved inwardly at its upper end to engage springs h h, preferably composed of two-ply material, as shown, so as to firmly hold the braces in the extended position. The braces e e of the upper portion of the stool are preferably hinged to the top of the band cl, as is shown in. Fig. 7.

The braces of the lower half of the stool are indicated by similar reference-letters to that of the upper portion, the said braces e eof the lower portion being hinged to the band 0 at the lower portion of its inner face, which will admit of the same folding to the center. The bands a and d are provided with lugs i v. at each side of the hinged braces e e, as is shown in Fig. 4, which will prevent any lateral motion of the braces in case the hinge should become loosened. To the inner face of the band a are secured spring hooks or catches 7t 7t, adapted to engage on lugs Z Z on the inner face of the band 0 when the stool is folded and retain the same in this position. The lower ends of the springs g are provided with eyelets m, carrying rings m, to which are attached straps n n, fastened together at the crossing-point and employed for folding, as will be hereinafter more fully explained. To the lugs Z Z is secured a strap 0 for releasing same from engagement with the catches la to extend the stool, a similar strap being secured across the top of the cover. The band cl is slightly less in diameter than the band a, admitting of the same entering within the band a when the stool is folded, and the band cis of greater diameter, admitting of the same folding over the band a, said band 0 carrying eyelets pp, to which is secured a strap q, forming a handle.

The operation of myimproved folding stool will be readily apparent from the views of the same that I have shown in the drawings. VVe' will assume, however, for the purpose of more clearly illustrating the same that the parts have been secured in their respective positions and the stool is in the extended or unfolded position, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, and it is desired to fold the same. The operator grasps the straps 77/77, at the point where they cross and pulls the same toward the base of the stool, which will release the springs, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, allowing the braces to swing inwardly and the band a to fit over the band cl, bringing the stool in the position shown in Fig. 2. If it is desired to completely fold the same in the manner shown in Figs. 3 and 4, a similar operation is performed on the lower straps n n, to that described above, folding the braces in the same manner and the entire mechanism of the stool within the band 0, causing the lugs Z Z to engage in the catches 7; k, and retaining the stool in this position, where it maybe easily carried by the handle. hen it is desired to open the same, the operator grasps the strap across the seat and the strap 0 and by pulling outward releases the lugs ll from engagement with the catches 7t in, unfolding the braces of both the upper and lower half of the stool and bringing the same to the extended position, when the springs h and 9 will again engage and hold the braces rigid.

By this construction it will be noted that an extremely neat and compact form is obtained, thereby enabling a person to carry the same conveniently, which will be of great advantage to spectators of parades, for camping purposes, and the like. By using the stool in the partially-extended position, as shown in Fig. 2, it will also be extremely con venient for use as a footstool in the house. It will also be noted that various changes may be made in the details of eonstruetion-for instance, any number of sections maybe operated in the same manner, the method of locking the braces in the extended position,

and like unimportant details-without departing from the generalrspiritrof my invention.

IIavin fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a folding stool, the top and base hands, a central band and hinged braces whereby the bands fold within one another, substantially as described.

2. In a folding stool, a band carrying a cover to form a seat, a base-band, a central band, braces hinged centrally and extending from the top band to the center band and similar braces extending from the center band to the bottom band, substantially as described.

A folding stool consisting of an upper, a lowerand intermediate band, hinged braces connecting the top and bottom bands with the central ban d, said braces folding inwardly, the upper and intermediate band being adapt ed to fold with their braces within the area of the lower band, substantially as described.

4. In a folding stool, the band carrying a cover to form the seat, hinged braces secured to the band, springs for holding the braces in an extended position, a band at ornear the center of the stool to which the intermediate braces are hinged, lower braces seen red to the band and a band formingthe base to which the lower braces are hinged, substantially as described.

5. In a folding stool the top, intermediate and base bands, braces hinged at or near their centers and connecting the upper and center as well as the center and lower bands, springs carried by the braces to hold them extended, straps secured to the springs to operate the hinged braces and allow same to fold, hookeatches on the top band, and lugs on the baseban (1 to engage and lock the stool in closed position, substantially as described.
