Abstract

532,375. Umbrellas. THORENS AKT.-GES., H. Aug. 28, 1939, No. 24720. Convention date, Sept. 27, 1938. [Class 134] The stick of a folding umbrella comprises three telescoping sections 1, 2, 3, Fig. 1, held in extended position by spring catches. The bottom section 1 is carried by a disc 30, Fig. 13, which is held by a spring ring 36 in the open end of the handle 31 when the stick is fully extended, and in the collapsed condition of the umbrella-lies at the bottom of the handle. A fixed rod 34 operates in the section 1, which is tubular, during the opening and closing movements of the stick, and through the medium of a yoke 45 carrying a cross-pin 47 and a wedging block 46 releases and locks the spring latches by which the sections 1, 2 and 3 are held together. The runner 4 is held in its upper position for holding the ribs open by a spring latch 6 carried by a sleeve 52 on the upper stick section 3 ; the latch 38 for holding the stick sections 1, 2 also serves to hold the runner in the closed position of the umbrella. The ribs comprise three sections 13, 19, 24 telescoping into one another. The section 13 consists of two limbs 13<SP>1</SP>, 13<SP>11</SP> of round wire bent into U-shape and pivoted to the head 8 by means of a wire 12. The section 19 is of U- or V-section and carries a slide, 18 to which the stay 5 is pivoted. The stay is also U- or V-sectioned and lies substantially parallel to the section 19 in the closed position of the umbrella. When collapsed,; the limbs 13<SP>1</SP>, 13<SP>11</SP> respectively slide in the channels of the section, 19 and the stay 5, and the end of the latter abuts against a hooked end of the limb 13" in the open condition of the umbrella, to prevent collapse. The section 24 is also U- or V-shaped, and slides on the section 19, being held in extended position by a spring catch 25, which is released when the ribs are being collapsed by an extension of the limb 13<SP>1</SP> of the section 13. When the umbrella is closed, prior to being collapsed, the ends of the ribs are placed around the overhanging projection 67 on the disc 30, which is then moved into the handle 31 and holds the ribs in closed position. The head carries a spring 14 with a series of tongues lying in slots in the head and bearing behind the rib sections 13 to cause them to open slightly when the ends of the ribs are released during the extending movement of the stick.
