Abstract
340,132. Folding umbrellas &c. GASPOLON, A., 25, Rue Dauphine, Paris. Dec. 20, 1929, No. 39064. [Class 134.] In umbrellas and the like, in which the umbrella is folded up into a tubular containing sheath, the ribs and fabric close up in the contrary direction to the movement of ordinary umbrellas. The ribs are attached to a notched member 6 fixed to a rod 7 which slides through a notched member 11 to which forks 5 are pivoted. The rod 7 is connected by a slide 9 to a sleeve 8 sliding in a narrow longitudinal slot 10 down a main tubular rod 1, stopped at the end by a handle 2. In the closed position the notched member 6 partly slides into the member 11 so that the pivots of the ribs and forks are at the same level. On opening the members 6, 11 with the rod 7, ribs and forks move up until a ferrule projection 14 stops the member 11 through which the rod 7 and the member 6 then slide in order to unfold the ribs from the forks and open the umbrella. The cover may be opened by a spring release, and closed by a traction cable inside the tube. The pivoting together of each fork and rib is arranged so that the fork is folded upon the rib between the pivot and the notched member.
