Abstract

Opening and closing. -Large umbrellas of the kind used in gardens, over market stalls, and cafÚ tables, have struts 4 connected at the inner ends to a stationary pivot 3 and one end of ribs 5 connected to a vertically movable centre member 7. Preferably, the pivotal connections between the ribs and struts are so disposed that when the umbrella is being opened and shut the weight of the upwardly moving parts substantially balances the weight of the downwardly moving parts, and the force required is reduced to a minimum. The umbrella is supported on a hollow pillar of two telescopic parts 1, 2. The pivot sleeve 3 is fastened to the upper part 2 of the pillar. The movable member 7 forms the upper end of a rod 8 vertically slidable in the pillar 1, 2. A lock member 9 on the rod 8 projects through a slot in the part 2 of the pillar and serves as a hande for opening and closing the umbrella.
