A telescopic umbrella, shown in the half-open position, comprises an upper stick part 1 adapted to be telescoped into a lower stick part 2 ribs having upper members 3 in the form of hollow rails enabling lower rib members 4 to slide therein. Main struts 5 connect a runner 6 with the top ends of the lower rib members 4 through the intermediary of hinge members 9 which slide on the upper rib members 3, the latter being provided adjacent their lower ends with' a projection or bulge (not, shown) which bears against the hinge members 9 to retain the ribs in their extended position. Auxiliary struts 7 are hinged to approximately the centre points of the main struts and are connected to the upper stick part 1. The upper rib portions 3 are connected to a crown 8 which is not connected to any other part of the umbrella frame, but lies against the upper stick part 1 when the umbrella is fully opened. The stick parts 1 and 2 are held in their extended position by a spring catch 11, mounted on the part 1, and which projects through a slot in the part 2 when the stick parts are telescoped to retain the stick parts in this position and to provide retaining means for the, runner 6 when in its lower position.
