663,132. Umbrellas. WUSTER, A. Aug. 12, 1949 [Dec. 10, 1938], No. 21051/49. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 9 of the Acts, Aug. 12, 1949.] Class 134. An umbrella frame, comprising auxiliary struts h articulated to the main struts f and connected to an auxiliary slide b which is subjected to the action of a spring d for opening the umbrella frame, is characterized in that each auxiliary strut passes, at the end at which it is articulated to its associated main strut, through a slot g in this main strut and is provided at said end with a widened portion i similar in form to a hammer head, being in the same plane as the umbrella stick a and the associated main strut, the arrangement being such that the lower surface of the hammer-head rolls along the upper surface of the main strut when the umbrella frame is opened or closed. The spring d in addition to effecting an automatic or partially automatic opening of the frame, particularly in a telescopic umbrella, also holds the hammer head in engagement with the upper surface of the strut. The main struts f are spaced from the ribs e by a sleeve c and the ends of the auxiliary struts adjacent the stick are cranked so that the auxiliary struts and U-section main struts can be close together when the umbrella is closed. In an alternative arrangement, the cranked portions are omitted and the main struts are inverted so that the hollows of the U-section face downwards and receive the auxiliary struts when the umbrella is closed.
