In the umbrella frame as disclosed in the parent Specification a catch 22, pivotally mounted in the auxiliary runner 15 to engage under the action of the spring 25, an a slot 29 to temporarily arrest movement of the auxiliary runner and prevent telescoping of the rib parts, is removed from the slot by engagement of a cam surface on the head 18 of an auxiliary strut 12 with a cam surface 27 on the catch. One of the auxiliary struts pivoted by a wire 16 engaging a groove 17 is aligned with the catch 22 which is pivoted on a pin 24 in a slot 20 in the auxiliary runner, the spring 25 being bent around the pin 24 and pressing against a wall 21 closing the slot to urge the nose 23 of the catch into engagement with the slot 29. When the struts 12 are splayed by movement of the main runner and ribs 9, the head 18 engages the cam surface 27 and the catch is released for full opening of the canopy. In closing the canopy the sloping surface 30 of the nose 23 engages the edge of the slot 29 to prevent engagement of the catch with the slot and impedence of the telescoping of the stem is prevented by the presence of the stem part 2 inside the stem part 1 and by the engagement of a cam surface on the strut 12 near the head 18 with a cam surface 28 on the catch as shown in Fig. 6. A guide groove may be provided in the stick to ensure entry of the nose 23 into the slot 29 or the stick is of polygonal section one of the side surfaces forming the guide.
