Abstract

823,333. Umbrellas. WUSTER, H. Oct. 30, 1957 [Oct. 31, 1956; Dec. 12, 1956; July 19, 1957], No. 33819/57. Class 134 An umbrella comprising a telescopic shaft having two tubes slidably disposed one in the other, the inner tube carrying a crown to which the ribs are hinged and the outer tube carrying the handle and a slider tube to which the spreaders are hinged, the spreaders being so formed and arranged that they tend to move the inner tube out of the outer tube, may be opened either by sliding the inner tube into the outer tube or by moving the slider tube to an upper position on the outer tube. The locking means provided for holding the umbrella open in each case is released by actuating means disposed adjacent the handle. As shown in Fig. 1, a spring catch 10 fixed to the lower end of the inner tube 1 is provided with a nose 11a extending through a slot in the outer tube 5 for engagement with a slot in the glider tube 7 when the umbrella is opened by moving the slider tube upwards. A metal loop 15 passes over the catch 10 and is attached at its lower end to a latch lever 11 of to a member 12, Fig. 7, between the latch 11 and a spring 13 which tends to hold the latch in its locking posi- The latch lever, formed by an appropriate stamping, is provided with an arm 11b pivoted in the outer tube 5 at a point adjacent the handle 4, a hook 11a adapted to engage in a slot 1a in the inner tube 1 when the umbrella is opened by sliding the inner tube into the outer tube and an arm 11c extending through a slot in tube 5. Pressure on the arm 11c releases the umbrella from either of the open positions. An alternative latch, lever 20, Fig. 12, is hung, in the lower loop of the coupling member 15, the locking hose 22 being carried by the actuating arm 20a. In a further embodiment, Fig. 13, a latch lever 30 is attached to a bow spring 31 which is attached at its upper end 31a to the outer tube 5 or at its lower end to the coupling member 15. An inward pressure on the arm 30a of the latch 30 flattens the bow spring 31 thereby causing the member 15 to release the spring catch 10 from engagement with the slider tube 7 and also serving to move the locking nose 30c of the latch 30 out of the slot 1a in the inner tube 1 when the umbrella has been opened by the alternative method. The tubes 1 and 5 may be of polygonal cross-section.
