Abstract
1,120,154. A locking device for umbrellas. BREMSHEY & CO. 27 Jan., 1967 [22 March, 1966], No. 4193/67. Heading A4P. A self-opening umbrella comprising a stick 2 having a tubular handle 7, a slider 8 mounted on the stick having a locking device to lock the slider in position on the stick when the umbrella is closed and a spring 16 which acts on the slider to urge it into a position in which the frame is open, is provided with a mechanism for releasing the locking device which includes a sleeve 29 slidably mounted within the handle and which is biased in one direction by a spring 36, the sleeve having a part 50 which projects beyond the edge of the handle towards the crown and which may be moved manually against the action of the spring to release the locking device. The locking device is suitably a spring 40 made of sheet steel pivoted at one end by pin 39, which has two noses 42 and 45 to engage the slots 46 and 51. The nose 42 engages the shoulder 43 of the slider 8 and holds it locked. When the sleeve 29 is manually moved, the upper edge of the slot 47 on the bush 49 moves along the guiding edge 48 and pushes the nose inwards, thus bending the spring and moving the other nose 42 inwards, disengaging it with the shoulder of the slider 8.
