A runner 2, movable along a solid or tubular umbrella stick 1, comprises an outer tubular member 8 axially displaceable relatively to an inner tubular member 7, which is slidable on the stick to open and close the frame, and two pairs of rollers 9, 10, the rollers 9 being engaged in a circumferential groove 3 near the upper end of the stick to lock the frame in open position and the rollers 10 being engaged in a circumferential groove near the handle end of the stick to lock the frame in closed position. The members 7, 8 and the rollers, which taper towards their ends, are preferably of plastic. The rollers are carried rotatably in axially spaced slots in the member 7 which has an annular ridge 12 providing friction between the members 7, 8. In the upper locking position, shown in Fig. 1, the runner abuts stops 6 and the rollers 9 are displaced into the groove 3 by a wall 11. To close the umbrella frame, the member 8 is displaced downwardly relatively to the member 7, freeing the rollers 9 from the groove 3, and when a shoulder 14 engages the rollers 10 further downward movement pulls the inner sleeve downwards, the rollers 9, 10 rolling freely on the stick until the rollers 10 are thrust into the circumferential groove near the handle by the shoulder 14. Movement of the member 7 is thereby arrested but downward movement of the member 8 continues until the annular wall 18 locks the runner 10 in that groove.
