Abstract

1,272,460. Garden umbrellas. J. ASPLIN. Oct.22, 1970 [Nov. 3, 1969], No.53734/69. Heading A4P. In a garden umbrella, of the kind comprising a stem 1 and a canopy 2 which can be erected by means of pivoted ribs or struts, the lower end of the stem is tapered and provided with an external screw-thread 6. In the embodiment illustrated the stem is tubular and the lower end is a solid metal plug 3 provided with a shoulder (4), Fig.2 (not shown), which abuts the lower end of the tubing. The plug is held in place by a rivet 5. The stem is screwed into the ground by means of handles 10 which can be swung down from a vertical position adjacent the stem to a horizontal position at right angles to the stem. Alternatively, Fig. 4 (not shown), the handles each comprise a horizontal portion (20) and a portion (21) joining the end of portion (20) to the stem 1. The stem may be formed in sections which fit telescopically in one another, a locking means, Fig.4 (not shown), being provided to hold the sections together.
